Re: Do you really want to come to NZ?
Folks can compare as much as they like with the driving in places like Saudi or Africa, but I understood we were comparing standards in Western democracies! Would anyone really emigrate to Saudi? And as such those countries where we move to will naturally be compared with where we came from in Europe. And, as such these developed countries should know better. Therefore, the point still stands that the driving in NZ could be much, much better!

of course NZ lacks sophistication compared to Europe - just look at the amount of real "high culture" here abouts.......
can be part of the appeal though......
yes sandals and socks is an NZ thing too - kinda sets off the fluoro fluffy pork-pie hat that umpteen Kiwis of age 55 to 75 wear.......

As for European sophistication - well I guess that's the European equivalent to NZ's clean and green image.
The facilities, history and cultural events are there sure, but the average European is about as far from sophisticated as you can get. As you travel around France and Italy it is incredibly hard to believe that these countries are the centres of fashion (I suppose that's isn't quite true as most of the consumption will be driven by London and New York). Most rich Europeans have abominable fashion sense and look very kitsch. And the majority of the rest of the population are not bothered by fashion or commercialism so wear the same stuff they did 10 years ago.
Additionally they are some of the most insular people around.
I 'served' 2 years in Belgium and France - beautiful for a holiday, totally different story when you live there.

Sandals and socks is most definitely not an NZ thing, it was English but doesn't seem that popular anymore amongst the younger generations. The biggest culprits these days are the Europeans, especially the Dutch and Scandanavians for some reason.

And "Abominable Fashion" sense in France and Italy , eh ? Are you drunk ? I suppose the food is bad there too ? Thinks to himself and falls about laughing

And for the record I miss the sophistication of the British:
The New Zealand version of the above owns a car I guess....
I don't read all the blurb that the authorities here publish to attract migrants to the country but I can't imagine the Govt. selling this place as a sophisticated nation - do they? I thought it was 'laid back' and 'casual'....
The PJs in the supermarkets freaked me out when I first noticed it, I felt like pulling them aside to have a word, but then thought better of it... even Vicky manages to get dressed for her shoplifting ventures!

Re: Do you really want to come to NZ?
TBH we have moved from nice area to nice area and there are far more phat exhausts who must have "under-endowed" drivers and regulation pimply/"old enough to know better" fools in souped-up celicas, etc than there were in the worst areas near to our UK place.....but we all have different experiences....

Re: Do you really want to come to NZ?
NZ isn't for everyone and thank god for that, otherwise it would get over populated and therefore spoilt very quickly (like the uk maybe?) personally I'm glad there are people on here who don't like the place. I hope they put more people off coming....
I lived in a tiny hamlet in the Uk in a beautiful part of the country (and even though I've moved to a town here in NZ it's lovely and peaceful and I'm so chuffed I've made this choice. There are problems everywhere in the world and nobody should expect paradise. if you do you are doomed! I'm hoping people that don't like NZ have lived in enough places big and small to base this decision on.
I knew a girl in the UK who spent 3 disastrous months in Christchurch with her Kiwi boyfriend who then dumped her and she came home telling everyone how NZ was the pits?!!!! never saw any other place and lived in quite a deprived area so heh, no sh..... sherlock. how can anyone slag a country off if they haven't seen more than 1 place and surely her personal experiences clouded the issue....

That's an interesting way of looking at it! We do need people into this country though, the clever ones go to Australia, so what with being so un-sophisticated, bad driving, sandle/sock wearing I guess we need educating.....I am not sure of the top of my head but I think more that 25% were born overseas - but they do not drive you see, only 'kiwis' drive!

brussels sprout - by 'silly comment' do you mean anything that disagrees with your 'wise' observations?
And, as far as Europe is concerned, they do know how to drive over there. It fact, in France, it's compulsory to immediately drop your speed on the motorways when it rains.
Why so touchy about something that's pretty obvious to many who come here from Europe, that the driving leaves much to be desired? It's perhaps you who needs to get out more!

Silly silly comment , the original claim was that NZ had "The worst drivers IN THE WORLD", now you are changing it to "developed countries", perhaps next is "developed countries in South West Pacific" ???

You have to be kidding right
The French have to be THE sexiest women for me and I spent a bit of time there for work.
As for the socks & sandals, it was a joke but I guess I have to spell that out.
See heaps of “Kewl” youngsters with all the gear on and then there it is - jandles & socks.
As for sophistication in Europe, it could be like a sense of humour, you gotta have it to appreciate it or understand it

Have to agree with you there. I've seen eighty-year-old women in France with more style and sophistication than I've seen in Queen Street, Auckland!
