A politician in Pakistan had a press conference and live streamed on facebook, but a staffer forgot to take off the cat filter, photos in the article.

Interesting article.

The map of trees is interesting. Lack of tress on the east side especially DTES leads to warmer surface temps.

When I have to go to the west end of downtown or the west side of the city, all the trees are so nice, and wish we had that kind of tree coverage on the east side.

We had a nice tree in front of our window, it goes up to the 3rd floor, but it never came back this spring, died over the winter. Noticeable difference in the comfort of the apartment without this tree this year.

Now if only the city would come and do something about it. (the city has been made aware of it by more than one resident.)

US related but they don't have a random thread and I found this interesting, (the article is from 2018 and accurate as of 2018)

" John Tyler was the first vice president elevated to the presidency on the death of the chief executive and the first president to marry in the White House. Nearly 175 years later, two of his grandchildren are still around."

My experience in this neighbourhood where we have LOTS of street trees is that you have to be patient.

First, the City Arborist has got to come and determine that the tree really is dead, and not just need severe pruning.

Second, they seem to do removal of trees at certain times of the years ....... "Immediately' would be for a tree in imminent danger of falling and injuring someone.

Third, the city contracts one or more private companies to actually chop the trees down. They, of course, also have their own clients.

It might well be fall before they come and cut your tree down.

The stump will then be left there for a time before another crew come and dig it up.

Wont be surprised if it goes another winter before its gone ha ha

I am just bummed it died, it was such a nice tree in summer, really kept the apartment cooler as it blocked almost all the sun.

Sobeys does some very nice chocolate eclairs. Real cream but it's icing on the top and too much of it.

Today I tried an independent store I've never been to before. Among their very nice looking cakes were eclairs that have real chocolate on top. I was so excited I didn't think to check it was real cream.

I'll find out later.

If it's not, I'll put some Devon cream in.

If it is any consolation, they have to replace any tree that has had to be removed.

The caveat here being that it is then up to the people living around there to keep the tree watered both while it gets established and for several years afterward.

We had a cherry tree removed from by our house about 5 years ago. The new tree came with a label tied around it asking "Please water me' . It flowered last year for the first time, but it is a different variety from the old (ca 60 years old) up and down the street. For one thing, it has white flowers and the others are all pinky-red.

Using google street view which goes back to 2009, this tree was a small sapling in 2009, so probably planted around that time, so 10 years ago. The July 2018 and October 2018 google street view the tree was still living, although October it was losing its leaves.

Looking at the 2009 photos it was surrounded by more grass and dirt the entire length of the street. This building construction started in 2013 and by the next google street photo in 2016 when the building was completed, the side walk has been widened considerably eating up most of the grassy space and dirt. The tree currently sits in a square of dirt about 4 feet L x 2 feet W.

So was here for at least 10 years and grew considerably in those 10 years.
