Cost me $4.99 for delivery. Bus fare would have been $2.75 each way. Why go? (unless urgent of course) |

Why did we humans evolve in a way where hair thins on our head (well not everyone but a good amount) as we age, but seems to have no problem sprouting up like the nose and ears, getting older is a lot of work.

Now here's an interesting idea... https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-54612879
I'd certainly take something like this into consideration as one who never throws anything away unless I can't make an attempt at repair. But.. you can hear the squeals, it'll cost more etc.etc. nobody wants it... and. and.. and.... But how many would buy a car that was labelled.. "Repairability 0%" I wonder? As an oldie, the maxim "Make do and mend" still forms a basis for a frugal way of life. |

As an oldie, the maxim "Make do and mend" still forms a basis for a frugal way of life. As a society we should really move back towards the repair rather than replace model for so much of our stuff. Would require higher prices at time of purchase, but long run probably cheaper than replacing every 5-10 years. And companies need to stop making their products so they cannot be repaired. Companies that make aquarium filters are getting bad, in the past the filter box and pump could be seperated, so if the pump fried or died, you could just replace the pump. Now some companies are enclosing the pump into the plastic filter box, so when the pump dies the entire filter is useless and you have to buy a completely new one. |

I wonder if the items I ordered for the cat will actually arrive on Monday from Amazon. I ordered them last Monday, but they haven't even shipped yet.

Yes, well she already has one, we adopted him last week. Oliver, about 2 years old. Gets along with the dog perfectly. Eating like a champ now, he is a little skinny and the adoption place said he was a finicky eater, but he has eaten everything I have offered, so maybe was just nervous and not eating much, or they were feeding him food he didn't care for, but finicky he is not. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...a1855d6888.png |

Are they popular - or even legal - in Vancouver? The rental e-scooters are very popular in many European cities, but they have become a terrible eyesore... they're just left everywhere. Some councils have banned them completely, some only allow rental use, some allow private ownership (think there's an insurance timebomb waiting there...). There's also the question of whether they're allowed to be used on the pavement/sidewalk, bicycle lanes or roads. I wouldn't fancy one in North America if you're only allowed on the roads.

It's been a few years since we lived in a wood framed building, forgot how much noisier they were. Can hear the water in the pipes when the person above flush their toilet, or take a shower. Not the noisiest wood frame building, but certainly not as quiet as concrete.
The flooring seems to be well insulated, don't hear every footstep in the above unit like some wood buildings. |

BC Hydro is going to cut power for 10 hours in 2 weeks, luckily mostly overnight. Hoping its not cold that night as it may get a chilly without heat. A little worried about the food in the fridge, I think the freezer might be okay for 10 hours as long as its not opened, but dunno if the fridge can sustain 40F or cooler for 10 hours.

Strange they would cut it off for that long - that's going to cause issues for a lot of people. :( |

Casualty of the pandemic. Bakery in North Vancouver opened in 1997, being forced to close, seems business has dropped too much to cover the 7,000 per month rent, and the landlord wouldn't work with the bakery owner nor would the landlord apply for Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance.
14 employees will lose their jobs, and the bakerty will close its 2 other locations as well, as most of the baking is done out of the North Vancouver location. The bakery has seen a 70% reduction in business this year. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...tion-1.5780397 Metro Vancouver has fired 3 employees who were working on the dam maintenance when the dam suddenly opened which ended with 2 people losing their life down stream. https://www.citynews1130.com/2020/10...m-water-surge/ |

That just doesn't seem right; how hard is it going to be for the landlord to rent the space out for $7000 right now? Sounds like a good opportunity for a bunch of yuppies to buy a bakery and form a dirt hippie co-op or something like that.
And then some wonder why there are so many big chains, well big chains are all who can afford the obscene rents these days and some locations even big chains are pulling out rather than pay high rent. You gotta be pretty wealthy to even start a business these days. |

Today is the last day of 2020 that the sun shall set after 5pm here in Kelowna with a sunset of 5:35pm (Vancouver sunset is 5:51pm)
Wont see an 5pm or later sunset until end of January, the dark times have arrived. |

Don't believe anything on that internet thing. :):) ..wow...3:56..before 4 pm....not sure I could get used to that these days. As a kid in the UK, 'oop north' it set around 4 I think around Christmas time but the counter side to it was that it was still light at almost 10 pm in late june.
Comparison San Diego earliest sunset is 4:42pm, and they average 10 hours daylight on the shortest day. Which is only 2 hours more daylight vs Southern BC, but it honestly can make a difference, and well more sunny days also helps...lol Southern Florida is about as good as it gets in the lower 48 states, earliest sunset is 5:39pm and 10 1/2 hours of daylight. Best you can do in a US state is Hawaii, 5:42 sunset with just around 11 hours daylight on the shortest day. Of course it could be worse Barrow, Alaska (now known as Utqiaġvik apparently) won't see the sun at all from November 18th at 1:20pm to 1:16pm on January 22. |

No credit card, cash only, not a frill in sight. 35 years ago Costco came to Canada. Look at those ever so fancy television sets. That Burnaby store is still there too, although Burnaby has 2 locations now, but City of Vancouver still just has 1, and that one has no free parking either.

Avoiding the serious politics threads even though I definitely don’t get anything I think I know about US politics from watching the West Wing but why does Donna Moss vote by post in Wisconsin, even though she lives/works in Washington?

Take Trump, he works and currently as President resides in Washington, DC but his state of residence is currently Florida which is why he voted in Florida and not DC. (Trump was a resident of NY for most of his life, only moved to Florida last year.) For those like me who used to live in the US, but no longer do, we vote based on our last state of residence using last address we resided at. |

Same for us who were in the UK - vote based on last home address but only for 15 years. |

Assuming you mean Washington DC, many DC political types don't maintain their permanent residency in DC so they will vote where they have their permanent residency. Same with congress they may live and work in DC when in session, but they maintain residency in whatever state they are from.
