More on the man who died from rabies.

Swatted a bat away in May on Vancouver Island.

Maybe best to sleep with the windows closed, no screens and wouldn't be hard for a bat to get in and bite/scratch while sleeping.

Maybe it was just trying to be friendly.

Bit like yourself. Use it as an avatar.

Anyway. Let's have a Charlee pic in the Lounge Puppy Dog thread. Might encourage others to share. Might make me sort a pic of Dusty cat out too.

I was reading yesterday about a sleeping child that was bitten by a bat during the night in the UK. The mum said it must have flown in through the window. It was tested and was negative for rabies.

I had a friend a few years ago, well many years to be accurate, who lives in a rural town on a small holding, he woke up one very early morning and thought a moth had flown in through the window, so he switched on his light, and quickly switched it off again thinking that's a bloody big moth, it was in fact a bat, his first though was how to get rid of it, and being a farmers son he thought of using his 12 bore, but then thought it might make a bit of a mess, so he eventually used a sheet to guide the bat back through the open window, then quickly shut it.

How did they catch it? ;)

I found a bat scrunched backwards into a corner in the bar one morning, after a big horrific heavy metal show. I scooped him up in the dustpan and took him outside. He seemed to have an injured wing, but I couldn't be sure if it was real or an act, so I just put him under a tree behind the building and a half hour later he was gone. No idea if the music had any effect on his echo-location powers or not, but he'd probably never been subjected to anything like it. There is a picture somewhere, but not on this computer.

Apollo 11 in real time:
Last night on the news I saw a bit about the man who made this webpage; he took 2 years assembling and collating everything that happened including taped audio from the different mission control consoles and every scrap of film, every photo. You can just click on NOW and observe what was happening in this moment, 50 years ago.

I had a few in the house over the years (in Europe, not Canada) and we just turned off the lights in the lower layers of the house and then opened the windows higher up and they would leave. We were lucky enough to have 12 larger bats winter with us for several years and they didn’t give us any problems.

The weird thing about that bat in BC was that it was flying in the day time ......... bats do NOT fly in the day.

It slightly hit him, but must had made a microscopic scratch that he couldn't see.

It's all very unfortunate, but the advice if there is any kind of contact with a bat is to a) wash for 15 minutes with soap and water, and b) go to the doctor to get the anti-rabies vaccination.

I was surprised to see that bats were considered the only rabies carrying animal in BC ............... all these years, I've been under the impression that raccoons and skunks were also carriers.

Britain used to be considered free of rabies .............. that was why pet dogs brought in to the UK without proof that they had been vaccinated used to have to go into 6 month quarantine before being allowed to enter. That got many a big American star very upset when their beloved pet was refused!!

Hawaii has quarantine protocol to follow as well, I think Hawaii is still rabies free, the time in quarantine varies could be up to 120 days though but if you follow the requirements prior to going, can be under 5 days or 0 days, all depends on certain factors things being done before arrival.

Even President Obama's dog wasn't exempt although they followed all the requirements so their dog qualified for direct release. That was back in 2010.

Is Britain not still considered free of rabies? There are still vaccination requirements for animals coming in aren’t there?

I remember watching a terrifying tv series about rabies coming to Britain when I was at school

A fob, commonly called a key fob, is a small security hardware device with built-in authentication used to control and secure access to mobile devices, computer systems, network services and data. The key fob displays a randomly generated access code, which changes periodically

This is old but I still like it; it's what happens when you take the dancers from over there, bring them to America and put them on the side of a mountain drinking their own whiskey for a few hundred years.

I can't see anything from our window but i hear glass being broken, sounds like someone might be smashing car windows. Last week the business across the street got their window smashed, and a few days ago someone broke the glass on the bus stop shelter.

Such a wonderful area to live.

Counters in newer build condo/apartments dedicated to rentals are low for a reason, so folks in wheelchairs can access the counter, sink, stove while sitting in a wheel chair, its perfect level for that, but man does it ever suck for us tall folks. I need to find a stool that is short enough so I can sit and make things in the kitchen/cook comfortably, just too short and I end up with neck/back pain.

Trying this again, having issues with links posting. Vancouver driver decides to drive down stairs.

I'll continue to play? So FOB is a key? Or perhaps an electronic device that opens a door with a card and/or pass code? I googled it and got about 6 definitions of what a FOB is.

Ok, Jsmith said it was the FOB system 'for the building', and I said when it's broken he can't get into his building; those are 2 important clues. Jerseygirl's prompt answer to your question is a big help as well. https://britishexpats.com/forum/mapl.../#post12712252

It is quite common for travel insurance not to be charged because it can be a hassle collecting the money. I've had to pay up front and claim back later ........... though that can also be a hassle!
