We exchanged two or three letters (aerogrammes, mostly) every week, back when international phone calls were unspeakably expensive. She survived at her end, and I at mine. Mum's worst moments were when I backpacked for three months through the Middle East (this was in the mid-'60s) with a girl companion whom I met "on the road". She and I later married in Canada, and were introduced to our respective mothers-in-law in Australia almost four years after that.

I have always felt a strong admiration for all those English mothers who in the 1800s watched some of their children emigrate to Australia and other colonies (voluntarily, I mean!) in the almost certain knowledge that they would never see them again. Imagine what a terrible "Mum thing" that must have been, Piff. Yikes. We have it a lot easier than they did!

I think people that emigrated before telephones and when flights were non existent or prohibitively expensive were incredibly brave, we do have it very easy in the grand scheme of things!

She discusses all kinds of things with me ................ in fact, despite what the OH says, I listen far more than I talk during a call that can last over an hour. She even passes work worries by me, not that I know anything about her work, but she sometimes says I spot some common sense possibility that solves a problem, and that just talking to someone else other than her OH and partners about it helps.

We always have talked a lot ........ and her "flipped lid" doesn't last very long

Gordon ........ those mothers in the 1800s probably responded very much as my father and OH's parents did. "We wish that we could have done it when we were young. You'll have a better life than here."

DD's flipped lid is usually just a flash in the pan to, my technique of texting a few hours before chatting g seemed to work well, we laughed about it. Apparently some of her friends are envious of our relationship.

As to housing costs in Guelph - it's a Uni town, so prices aren't generally that cheap.. however, there's lots of pubs, restaurants and 'stuff' to do there :D

we'd found the presto card thank you, so I was putting in the incorrect destination, it only works out ten bucksish each way, which is apparently cheaper than she anticipated, they are also going to car share when they can, I should have more faith lol.

I was just looking at various discussions about this (after googling) and I see reference to three choices - cell/mobile, landline or even email.

Of course I can't say whether it's UK, USA or Canada arms of Capital One so if it's the wrong one for you it may not apply.

They don't give me the email option which would be nice...lol

There are 2 boxes to choose from landline or cell, but if I choose landline I get a unable to verify error, so the only option of the 2 that actually work is the texting to the cell.

They have both the cell and home on file, but however they verify the number the home phone for whatever reason can't be verified by Cap1.

I must admit that struck me as odd. I mean if an imposter has got that far impersonating you, it's not much of a stretch to think they could access your email too

I saw that issue cropping up for loads of people. :(

I bought a pack of crumpets today. In Giant Tiger of all places. I knew them as Pikelets as a child.

I went off them in my teens but just for old times' sake I got them.

They didn't have the smell nor the taste I remember. In fact they were amazingly bland and I had to put Marmite on, something I would never have considered way back then.

They were nice with the Marmite but so is toast and an entire loaf can be bought for the cost of the pikelets.

We called them Pikelets too. I buy them from Longos, all year round. Love them with grilled cheese on top.

Crumpet/pikelet pics please. Pikelet to me is a small cold fattish pancake himself eats with jam. Crumpet has holes in its upper side for the melted butter.

I remember looking them up a few weeks ago and if you google pikelets you get both. Then google crumpets and you also get both.
This comes up on wiki as crumpet but it was what I called pikelets, which was also on the wrapper back then.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...324bcea1bc.jpg

This comes up for pikelet

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...3ddd91f6d9.jpg

but so does this

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...cd7cffe8f1.jpg

My memory is of holes top and bottom but the ones I got today were holes on the top and like the middle picture on the bottom.

The middle picture reminds me of something back in blighty...sort of raisin mini pancake things?

Bev ...... that's what they are to me also.

We had crumpets at home, slathered with butter.

I'd never had pikelets until I went into digs in Liverpool, landlady had lived in Scotland fro some years, and that is what she often made for Sunday afternoon snack.

She made the batter, then dropped it by spoonfuls onto a special metal plate that she had that fitted over the burners on the stove. She piled them on a plate and kept them warm in the oven until all the batter was used up. Then she served with jam or marmite.

I also came across pikelets in Yorkshire after that.

So we did have an earthquake early this morning, well south of Vancouver and north of Seattle somewhere, I thought we did, but I couldn't tell for sure, only a 4.6.

Do you have any evacuation plan for if a big one does hit? People in disaster-prone areas often keep a "bug out bag" with essentials that they can grab on the way out if they have to leave in a hurry; contents vary. The same way fire drill instructions have assembly areas, you and Mrs Jsmith should have a meeting place arranged in case of emergency, should you get separated.

We have a small emergency bag contains food and water and some other small essentials, granted the bag is only useful if:

1- Someone is home when the quakes hit and can grab it.
2- If nobody is home the building isn't damaged and still allowed in.

Biggest concern is how well this 4 story, with underground parking will survive in a big quake, we are currently in a newer build so hopefully built to better standards but I would not want to be in any of those old concrete or brick buildings downtown/other areas they will not fare well. We looked at an apartment in a high rise built in 1972, and all I could think about way, would this building handle a big quake, older buildings just wont be built to the same level as newer buildings, a lot has been learned in the last 50 years about building for earthquakes.

Sometimes I wonder the questions people ask on reddit are legit or just trolling.

How can someone possibly not know that they can go to a bank and get rolls of coins.

its too bad apartments are so small, hard to have personal space and quiet and always on edge, sometimes i just want a room i can go to for quiet and peace.

Agreed. The Ottawa subreddit is full of people asking questions that could be answered in 30 seconds via a google search or gasp, what were they thinking, an actual phone call. Examples such as on a Sunday if a certain store is open or not or where can you buy soccer equipment in a certain part of Ottawa. The mind boggles at how helpless some people are.

I just saw that on the news and was surprised; how does BC remain rabies-free when practically everything with teeth here can get it? Skunks, raccoons, coyotes, muskrats, dogs, cats, and I assume bats can all carry it here.
