A stiff gin and tonic! One a day.
I was given two bottles for Christmas and they've gone, empty, evaporated. Just wondering if this was too much, though once upon a time a bottle lasted the weekend. Those were the days. So if you have a daily 'stiff' G&T, it will last a fortnight, therefore your 2 bottles in January is about spot on. Cheers!! |

We have a standard jigger that I use to pour a G&T for my wife. I use the 'double' end, which is 50ml (or 1.6oz in Yankee). That means a standard 70cl bottle will have 14 measures in it, and 28 if using the 'single' 25ml measure, but why would anyone want that?!

It's interesting that I chose to say that I pour a G&T "for my wife". Just dawned on me that's because it's been so bloody long since we had anyone else in the house to pour a drink for. God, how depressing. This COVID is sucking the joy out of life. Is it too early for a drink?

You might like Barbados Mount Gay Rum (I used to like the 12 year aged one, neat) https://www.lcbo.com/webapp/wcs/stor...1#.YBt5K1h7mpo or what about Metaxa Brandy? - https://www.lcbo.com/webapp/wcs/stor...8#.YBt5fVh7mpo (neat again for me) :) Many years ago I used to drink something we called 'blue bat' because under black light, it shone blue. It was made with Bacardi or Cane (white rum), poured over ice, topped up with tonic or soda water and a half shot of Rose's lime cordial. :D Memories, lol. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I stopped doing free-pour years ago and use a shot glass that holds about 1 1/4oz now. Bombay and Lemon ⤠and Luksusowa Vodka I buy in 1.75L (or occasionally the larger one and refill 1.75l because they fit in the cabinet).. While I don't drink a lot of whiskey, I do drink it occasionally so I'll keep a bottle of Scotch (usually Ballentines), Irish (Bushmills, and often Bushmill's Black as well), and Jim Beam Black Label. Those are all 750ml. I'm not a rye drinker, but when Wiser's puts out a special run of small batch rye in support of something it's always really good so sometimes I'll get one. Scotch and Irish has always cost a bit more than rye here, but rye has always been the top seller so volume influences pricing I guess. My palate doesn't justify buying single malt Scotch. Black label Irish and bourbon costs a bit more, but I can justify it because it takes a long time to use up. The far right side of the cupboard holds a Goldschlager to have one beside afternoon coffee once in a blue moon, 750ml Ouzo for medicinal purposes or appetite stimulant, and a 750ml Drambuie. That's the liqueur that gets replaced most often, because Drambuie on ice (or occasionally Ouzo) is my go-to 2 in the morning pain killer. It costs $50 ,but I couldn't make the bottle for that price, and if a few good Drambuie on the rocks doesn't dim the lights I'm in trouble. When the bar was still going and the kids would forget to cap bottles I'd get Bacardi White for nothing by running it through a coffee filter to remove the fruit flies and taking it home. I've used it in sangria or preserved fruit, but most often lime daiquiri's. I hate white rum because when I was young I drank a whole bottle at once on an army base and got in a little trouble, and haven't been able to stomach it since. There's some wine and brandy and cooking sherry in there too, of course, but that doesn't get used regularly either. Sound like a lot? Maybe, but even though I drink daily I rarely get pissed. Since being diagnosed with high blood pressure over 20 years ago I can't get really drunk without suffering a devastating hangover, and the desire isn't there. It's the same as me keeping a big stash of cannabis and concentrates even though I still use less than an ounce of flower a month, it's there if I want it (and I can always sell or give some to a friend in need). Maybe it's like my insane compilation of fishing tackle; I don't need it, but if a bus load of people showed up to fish I could kit them out. I call it the "quartermaster gene". I could load a big truck with all it takes to support an artillery battery for a week, so we'd have essentials, spares, and then whatever extras there was room for according to anticipated needs. The Boy Scout motto Be Prepared is there for a reason. None of my friends are this mad.

Makers Mark, a fair few of my artist friends drink that. Many years ago, pre gin, I drank Rebel Yell for a while. Are they similar at all? Not a fan of rum at all, just Bacardi in a mojito but I'll make them with gin , fancy brandies are ok, Cointreau in crushed ice is delish. That's it really,

Googled it: A dirty martini contains a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is typically garnished with an olive. |

Brandy makes me wheezy and blotchy. I can drink wine and whisky, no problem, but just a sip of brandy will literally give me hives.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
There are a lot of cocktails that use Bailies. If you like Bailies and coffee, drink that. Liquers are expensive so it's good to experiment with something you already have. In the 80's we used to sell a lot of Blueberry Tea, but even though I made hundreds of them I can't remember all ingredients. Ours was a high-end drink and I know we used Benedictine, but can't remember the rest (maybe GM, maybe Amaretto). We stopped doing it because when it became less popular it was cost prohibitive due to the Benedictine, and we had a ridiculously low profit margin. Look up Blueberry Tea and keep scrolling until you find a few that sound good to you, then choose from those. I'm leery of mixing any dairy based liqueur with other booze lest it curdle, but I know it is done. And when you post the puke emoji, watch out for your shoes.
