They both had children late into their senior years. Siouxie's linked article goes into pretty good detail, both remarried after their first wives died, and both married women some 30 years their junior the 2nd time around.

The building that was climbed is located at the corner of Beatty and West Pender and from what I can find, the crowd is likely on Pender St.

Originally known as the world building, but in 1937 renamed the Sun Tower when The Vancouver Sun newspaper bought the building. When it was completed it was the tallest building in Vancouver and for its first year tallest in Canada.

Original address was 100 W Pender but in 2011 the City of Vancouver forced an address change to 128 W Pender.

Ok, thanks. Can't say that I recognise it.

Read Siouxie's article (quickly) seems an interesting histrory. Would have liked it if the writer had put a specific birth year in for the parent. Married again at 54, to a 24 yo and had a further 7 children, that would suggest 10-15 years (given the woman's age) making him 69 at the age of the last child (the parent of the grandson). Not sure if the math works. Maybe.

Suppose when religion keeps a married couple from being buried together, compromise has to be found. This one seems rather unique if true.

I had been feeling under the weather the last couple of days, didn't think much of it, woke up this morning and feels like someone has stabbed the inside of my ear and sliced down to my throat, only the one side. It's kind of a weird feeling, having one side of throat sore and the other side feels fine, and the side that hurts oh joy a cold sore too forming, guess my immune system is trying to fight off an infection and the cold sore virus took its opportunity to shine as well.

I see 1 walk in clinic open today, if I can get into see a doctor I will try, never know these days as some places make you talk to the doctor virtually first, but not sure an ear infection can be diagnosed over the phone, once they open I shall call and ask.

Good luck; hope you get in. I opted not to go to the doctor last week about my long-standing sore/dry throat because I have 3 appointments at Sask Polytechnic Dental this week, and they do screening for oral cancer first thing at every cleaning. If I need a referral to an otolaryngologist they'll give me one.

Hit and miss these days which doctors offices will let you go in person, haven't gone to any of the clinics here yet so not sure of their policies, but once they open, I shall call them.

I don't think its anything serious like cancer, I think its an ear infection draining into the throat since its all on one side, I can't see anything in my throat where it hurts, no swollen tonsils, no white stuff, but I am not a doctor but I always like to see if I can see anything weird.

Looking at Dr google it could be anything from ear infection, tooth infection, tonsil infection and every other sort of infection possible, don't think its a tooth though causing it as I have no pain in any tooth, hopefully not, dental issues are way more difficult to deal with $$$ if you know what I mean, so hopefully just an ear infection.

Do you still have your wisdom teeth J? I know dentists in the US like to pull them when you are in your teens.

A few years ago my daughter had dreadful pain in her face, neck and ear. She thought it was an ear infection. Her doctor advised her to see a dentist. The dentist said it was a wisdom tooth that had become infected, although the tooth itself didn’t hurt. She had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted and ended up with a dislocated jaw.

I have them still they came through about 20 years ago or so. Could be a dental issue, but doctors are cheaper so I start with the doctor and go from there, if its dental it will have to wait.

If it’s a wisdom tooth infection, like my daughter had, it really cannot wait. She was in a lot of pain, couldn’t sleep and had to take a course of antibiotics for the infection, before the tooth could be extracted. She had all 4 removed.

It's the thing will dental, a dental emergency isn't considered healthcare so many end up not being able to get proper treatment to deal with it. There does appear to be 1 free/low cost dental clinic in Kelowna, it might be an option if needed depending on what they consider a simple extraction to be, not sure wisdom teeth fall into that category, but I don't know for sure. They don't say what their income cut off is, but there is an income assessment that is required before they can provide any services, sounds like it could be several weeks process just for the screening part.

I will give them a call tomorrow and inquire. Not 100% sure if they still exist, an article from a couple years back I found saying they were closing, but its still on their website and the website looks current since it has a COVID screening sheet on it, so I think they are still open.

I do wonder if dentists will see someone with a sore throat though, the dentist I was supposed to see in November and last week cancelled my appointments due first time having a cough, and 2nd time (last week) a bit of a sore throat so didn't pass the COVID screening. But maybe in a dental emergency they are less strict. or one has to wait until it becomes a true emergency and not just discomfort/pain. Not sure how dentists are deciding.

I do know 1 person who had a wicked bad tooth infection once, but couldn't afford the dentist and the wait list at the free clinic in his town was like 7 months long, eventually got so bad it became a medical emergency and was treated in hospital, and surgery in hospital to remove the tooth, and treat the infection which had spread, but really things should have to get the bad before people can have dental issues dealt with.

I did call the walk in clinic, have to talk to a doctor via phone first, which may not be today, and then if the doctor needs or wants to see me, I will go to the clinic.

And in your post above, we see why: you view them as "a miserable and decrepit bunch ... on the whole".

That's a truly despicable attitude, and I hope to God you are not in any position to influence the delivery of treatment, care, or comfort to the elderly.

I can see I've upset you a little bit.

Rest assured, I am not now and am never likely to be in any position to influence the delivery of treatment, care or comfort to the elderly, save for my own parents who share my views that limited resources should not be wasted on people in the final stage of life.

I do not have any "attitude" towards care home residents, indeed I don't know any. All I did is comment on how miserable and decrepit they appeared, which is largely true. And I can't blame them, it must be a pretty tedious existence.

And for clarity, I'm not against vaccinating care home residents, it is simply my opinion - and I am permitted one - that the limited resources of vaccine at present would be best served by first vaccinating the care home workers and other key workers which might help society as a whole to ease lockdown. As care home residents are very easy to isolate they already have a control in place that the key workers do not, and the residents themselves would be safer if their caregivers were vaccinated. It's simply my personal cost-benefit analysis on the best overall use of a limited resource. Once the caregivers are vaccinated, give it to the residents. It's no different to a hospital... not much point vaccinating the patients if you don't vaccinate the health care staff first.

I always think they look decrepit too. Growing old ain't no fun.

As to the vaccinations, I believe the idea is to vaccinate those most likely to die from Covid first. I made a small comment on this in the new Corona / Vax UK (Maple Leaf) thread.

I wish I could find a picture I saw (maybe on BE) of residents one side of a long window (or screen?) and some musicians on the other side entertaining them. I assume they had some way of hearing the music.

Some of the old folk had santa hats on. They didn't look happy, just as pets don't look happy when 'things' are draped on them.

My mum and MIL ended their days in a nursing home. My mum vowed she would never allow herself to be taken into one. In a way she fulfilled that wish. As soon as she arrived, she stopped eating, drinking and taking her meds. She only lasted a couple of weeks.

Of course, the other side of the coin is where caring for the person at home isn't really possible.

My wife was one who would never go in a home and nor would she agree to her mum going in one. When she fell and cracked a rib, the doctor at the hospital said at least think about it. For the next 2 months before she died, helping her from bed to wheelchair to toilet and back as well as just 'settling' her in bed for the night was physically and mentally draining with no let up. I felt like I aged a few years.

You are quite right of course. My mum fell and broke her hip and femur...they said she would not walk again...she was 89. She was taken from the hospital into a care home. My MIL had vascular dementia...she was in a home for 12 months before she died.

Doctor prescribed a steroid spray once a day for the nose. He doesn't think its a bacteria infection, said it's probably the eustachian tube being blocked and prescribed a nasal spray for it. If it doesn't resolve by the time the spray is done, to follow up.

Stupid spray wasn't covered either, always these random prescriptions that never seem to be covered..ha ha luckily it was only $48 I think my wife said.

Back to random stuff...

The people who are buying our house have suddenly told us they want to move in by mid-February if possible (previously they'd said end of March!). We don't have anywhere to go yet, but it's going to be a hectic few weeks as we try to downsize our possessions from a huge house with garden to whatever is needed for an apartment.

Awkward time for moving out and nowhere lined up.

We did a similar thing on emigration and downsizing on the move before we emigrated. Sister in law got a lot of our stuff that simply didn't fit or work when we downsized and then emigrated.

I have not forgotten.

I was referred from the dental school to my GP over my sore throat, and in turn this morning was referred to the ENT/Otolaryngologist. I try to keep a glass half full sort of outlook. When a growth was detected in my jaw way back when, decades ago (I'm sure the fight caused it, so my fault in a way), the oral surgeon gave me a summary of what he would do, and asked if I had any questions. I asked what is the worst case scenario if it's a cancerous tumor? He said, well, if I'm unable to just remove it, I'll cut a section out of the middle of your jaw and replace it with a plastic piece. I said ok. He said, You seem pretty calm about this. I said, Have you seen the news? There are people getting blown apart all over the world right now... this is nothing.

Not sure that would help us at the moment. Our buyers are pretty much at the top of their budget and the current stamp duty holiday is a significant factor for them - that finishes on 31 March so that's acting as a hard stop for them. To be honest we want it done as soon as possible because the Scottish system is much quicker than the English system and we can't put in an offer in Scotland until we have exchanged in England.

This sucks for Pemberton, the only bank is set to close in July.

There is a credit union in town still, but credit unions can't always meet peoples needs.

Next town with a bank is Whistler, 30km away but its not exactly a fun 30km drive especially in winter.

There are places around Pemberton where internet/cell service can be spotty, in town its fine, but a fair few live up in the hills if the area where internet may not be easily accessible to some, one reason I can think of needing to go to a bank.

Also cashing checks, getting checks, a lot of landlords in BC want paper cheques still.

We do about 99% online but we still need to visit a branch a couple times per year.

I closed my bank account long ago and switched to my local credit union. I can't think of anything the bank did that the credit union doesn't. I haven't been inside it since last March, but haven't had a need to. I get cash from the drive-through, make e-transfers, and transfer money by phoning them when necessary. Their app lets me deposit cheques when I get them. Not all credit unions are created equal, and I found Valley First less helpful than Conexus here in Saskatchewan, but they had the convenient location.
