Angela Merkel arrives at the airport in Paris.
"Nationality?" asks the immigration officer.
"German," she replies.
"Occupation?"
"No, just here for a few days."

Dog prices in Canada are insane. It's one reason we drove to the US for Charlee, we wanted a specific breed (dachshund) and prices in Canada were like 2,000+, I was like nope never paying that much for a dog.

Canada made CNN again, this time for warnings of moose licking cars which until now I didn't know was even a thing moose desired to do.

Also made snopes, guess people thought it was fake.

There are some big bears in the river right now; I just saw a couple that seemed to be scrapping over a salmon.
edit; they're switching the cams around, this is pretty good

Thought they would all be snoozing by now, but looking like the weather is still pretty nice, may as well keep packing on the weight.

Pretty cool video from the flight deck of an Air Canada Jazz flight on arrival into Castlegar, BC. I like flying but wow this approach makes me nervous, not a big fan of flying near mountains at low altitude.

Indeed. I can't tell you how many times I would look at the arrival and departure screens at work and see these flights cancelled. You gotta be flexible when flying in/out of this airport. But now seeing this video and the approach, well I can see why they need decent visibility to make it in safely.

If that would make you nervous be glad you didn't have to land at Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong - one of the most difficult airports to land at - one runway - bank hard when you saw the checked patch on the mountain, swoop down over Kowloon City (from the ground you could count the rivets as they flew overhead)... happy days!
https://www.atlasobscura.com/article...-scary-landing

(I used to fly in and out of Kai Tak at least once every 2 years :) )

scrubbedexpat091 Nov 25th 2020 6:11 am

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Yes Kai Tak was another one of those crazy ones. I never went there myself, almost did once, right before the new airport opened, but never made it.

As a passenger I prefer more straight in approaches.

Passenger perspective sitting on the right side.

Passenger perspective sitting on left side

Night passenger perspective left side

Departure left side passenger view

Runway 09 Landing. (basically only 2 reasons 09 is used in San Diego visibility is poor, and 09 is the ILS approach, or during Santa Ana winds.) If you fly into San Diego and get a runway 09 arrival or departure, your a lucky duck. I have yet to to experience it, and when I worked in San Diego, it was so infrequent for our flights, a handful a year usually. 09 departures suck as they are almost always weight restricted so have to get creative with loading sometimes.

09 Departure

And a double mis approach to 09 in poor visibility, this flight diverted to Ontario in the end according to the description. Ontario is approx 115 miles from San Diego airport but is in general the weather diversion airport for San Diego, sometimes airlines will go to Los Angeles, the airline I worked for hub was in Phoenix and so all our flights went to/from Phoenix from San Diego, so in low visibility/poor weather they would almost always just do an air return to Phoenix rather than divert to Ontario or Los Angeles.

There is your video tour of San Diego Airport for today, thank you for watching and have a wonderful day.

SAN is also the busiest single runway airport in the US, and 3rd busiest single runway airport I think in the world.

Now as much as I like a bacon sandwich I cannot think of one reason why I might even consider wearing bacon scented underwear?
Perhaps other BE posters could come up with a list of pros and cons for wearing bacon scented underwear.

Novelty gift? One of my dad's co-workers back in the 60's boasted of buying his wife a pair of mink-trimmed panties...
Would these bacon-scented ones throw off the CBSA sniffer dogs?
["I don't smell any cash or drugs, but I think we should have a look anyway."] Would the ones trained to find meat just automatically alert, or would they know the difference?

Well it looks like CBSA have taken over the role and are now handling the dogs CFIA used to which were specifically trained for sniffing out food items whereas the CBSA dogs are trained for narcotics, weapons and currency. Although I admit they are smart as for distinguishing the smell being as bacon flavoured underwear or the real thing who knows? Luckily they just sit rather than the old days were drug dogs used to indicate by pawing and sometimes biting.

In 1996 I was hired at the San Diego Zoo, worked in gift shops, the zoo turned 80 that year, boy did the concept of time change with age, in 1996, 2016 seemed so far away, and here we are ending 2020, feels like I blinked and poof 24 years passed. Hard to even believe it's been that long.

If things had gone to my 1996 plan, I'd still be working there

Random question. How do I see the posts on BE where someone has replied to one of my comments. I can pull up my "Subscribed threads" page fairly easily (and then the threads with updated comments are in bold) but there used to be a page that was more personalized, in that it only listed the threads in which someone had replied to a comment I made.

On the 'My Profile page, scroll down past the threads and Karma noticces and you will find 'Who Quoted me' links are there.

Thanks Mike. That sound about right...but just checked the My Profile page and it doesn't have any Karma notices or a Who Quote me ??? Just a second profile snapshot and some related tabs? I wonder if it's not working?

Seems to be working now. Thanks.
