These come highly recommended. By none other than me.
They work well in the actifry although some of the crispy coating comes off. Great in the oven. Best. oven. fries. ever.

Some years ago I contacted them about what I thought was an error - someone was asking several hundred $$ for something that should have been about $15. Their response was that sellers could ask what they like.

The reviews are okay apart from the one that said "I think it turned some of my plants brown"

Ah yes that might be it. Some of the list prices are just insanely high you almost want to laugh. I hate 3rd party sellers, they end up causing prices to increase, 3rd party seller up's their price on something to say $33.99 then Amazon will up their own price to something like $33.98, really is a stupid system, but then I guess majority using Amazon are doing so for convenience, they are rarely the best value, but some of the pricing is just insane. Another product on Amazon $37 and some change, average retail price is around $15 at most independent pet stores.

I will have to see if the store has this brand, usually get McCain but haven't found any of theirs to be that good.

It's the obvious price fixing that gets me. I was looking at something last week - don't recall what.
Price $8 and free delivery
Price $5, shipping $3
Price $1, shipping $7

Both brands do a good potato wedge but Cavendish is king for fries. Usually cost a bit more but note the size of the bag in the pic. Works out much cheaper.

In my early days in Canada, my wife told me that 'oven' chips weren't available yet. In the supermarket one day I saw some. We bought them, ate them and they were very good. But it turned out they were not oven chips after all.

In the freezer, the wrapper was a bit crumpled and I had read vendish believing it was Ovendish with the O part obscured. That's when I discovered Cavendish.

Ah yes the ebay model, that was popular on ebay (maybe still is? I never use ebay) for awhile, very low price but high shipping.

But some airlines do it as well, namely the super low cost ones, Spirit in the US will advertise some low $1 fare but then add on fees after fees, and end result basically paid the same price as any other airline unless you travel with nothing but the clothes on your back.

How sad am I...I've never tried these in the Actify! I only ever make crunchy potatoes in it...but I do so probably four times weekly - the best bit of kitchenalia I've ever bought. I will give them a try.

The funny thing about living in NB is you realise the 'full' potential of the potato. Both McCain and Cavendish are massive employers in Atlantic Canada...obviously along with Irving, but coming from 'away' I hadn't fully understood the importance of these companies - terrifying really.

The wedges kind work better as there's no coating to come off.

Do carrots too. And parsnips but they're quite quick.

I do my own wedges, chips, square cut things...I sometimes wonder what I did in NB in my spare time other than cut up, soak and dry potatoes for the Actifry

I hate parsnips...but my husband loves them. We all like carrots- thank you...I will give them a try.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

You would think carrots in a bag would cost more vs those not in a bag, just because it seems it would take more effort and cost to bag carrots vs the bulk carrots not in a bag.

But then the dog food from New Zealand costs less vs the dog food made 45 minutes away from us, and it has to cost a heck of a lot more to ship dog food from NZ to BC, but I guess costs must be lower in NZ, and oranges too, the 3 and 5lb bags are cheaper than buying the bulk per pound.

All looks and tastes the same to me, but maybe technically the bulk is a better grade of produce?

I don't care for parsnips roasted but use them sliced and cubed in my soups and am fine with that. Husband, the Canuck, loves roasted parsnips.

I always thought they were white carrots, I actually had to look up parsnips in google to get a picture, and what I always thought were white carrots appear to be parsnips.

I have however never tried them, they never looked appealing to me.

They're delicious with turkey and chicken. Just a good idea not to cook them with the bit in the middle, but sometimes they're small enough for that not to matter.

But roast them to get them at their best.

I find that when cooking frozen oven fries (especially the coated ones) in the Actify it is best to use the snack basket, the fries dont get "tumbled" so the coating stays intact and no extra oil needed.

The one’s in your picture are the look I always go for in a roast...I just find them just a bit too sweet for me. I have been sitting here giggling about a ‘carrot gone off’. I don’t mind them in a big stew, the sugar is less intense. I’m not keen on the habit over the last 15 years or so of substituting sweet potato into a recipe that would normally have had potato either, it goes from being savoury to an unwanted sweet. Canada does use a lot more root vegetables than I am used to...quite a lot of them I rather like...golden beets was a new, and pleasant discovery...they also eat the leaves of beet, which makes sense, but I’d never had them before - l’m feeling Farmers Market withdrawal !

Speaking of vegetables, I was always mystified when scouse mentioned mashed carrot and turnip as one of the apparently must have side dishes to a Christmas roast dinner. Didn't sound too appetising to me, I like turnip in soup but mashed?

Anyway, one Christmas I thought I'd make it for him as a surprise. Boiled the carrots and turnips in salted water, mashed them with butter and a bit of cracked pepper. Waited for the applause.

He looked like he was sucking a lemon and asked 'what's this?' It took a while to work out, what he calls turnips are in fact swedes  God knows what he calls turnips, I didn't want to get into it.

I'm always amazed at the number of people who have mash with roast turkey. It's got to be roast potatoes and then there's no point in another version of spud.

Having said that, having convinced the others that roast turkey is actually very good and needn't be dry and that it's very good with roast parsnips, my homemade cranberry and orange sausagemeat stuffing it's now one of the family favourites and we have t at least three times a year.

Two of them are Canadian and American Thanksgiving - not that we're religious or anything, the turkeys are available for a decent price beforehand - and because that's close together I make some variation to what we have. Mashed spud (likely with carrot and rutabaga, just to avoid similar confusion ;)) replaces the roast spuds.

There will never come a day when I serve a roast dinner without roast spuds. I've tried to like turkey but can't quite manage it, even a nice juicy one. It's not even as if I don't like the taste, I think it's more that if I'm going to go to the trouble of cooking a roast dinner I'm going to do our favourite, lamb. Next on the list is beef, then pork, then chicken. Poor old turkey languishes at the bottom. It's probably because I live on the wrong side of the world ;)

I had to look up rutabaga

Totally agree with you. Turkey is overrated to me. You never see turkey done up in any unusual ways do you. A few years ago we spent Christmas at a french ski resort had a lovely christmas lunch done by my cousins and there wasn't a turkey in sight. It was great. Roast lamb, lots of lovely cheeses, charcuterie, fancy sandwiches, lots of wine and even french and english beer.

For me the hierarchy is lamb, seafood, chicken, beef, pork and way way way down turkey.

Ah - the way I was taught to cook turnip (rutabega) the 'Canadian way' - peel turnip, cut into 1 inch squares, cook in salted water until tender and 'orange'.
Mash and add lots of salted butter and some brown sugar, a little pepper.. keep mashing (and adding butter) until it comes together... surprisingly it's not bad!

You make it sound very appetising! I'd say that I'll give that a go but I probably won't  Only because I'm too lazy to cook something that I might not enjoy.

I never knew there were so many different names for the humble swede! I just tried saying 'Mom' and it sounded like 'Mong' - scratch that one then

Your near neighbours probably think that having a visitor who's had a flu shot means the entire family will have autism by morning. Honestly, you wonder how some people scrape up enough intelligence to just stay alive.
