This is a quite poignant but depressing article. To think that someone actually uses a phone as a phone. . |

If we are approved and can come up with the deposit money, we might be able to move into a lower rent place in February, would save $250 a month in rent if we are able to.

We don't need to be connected to the world 24/7. So why is my choice depressing for you?
Our landline is rapidly becoming the place for duct cleaning calls, supposed windows virus solutions, miracle credit card rate type calls. However keeping a landline saves more money on the bill than getting rid of it. Somewhat similar to a return train trip costing less than a single. |

We have tried a couple times to move into places that are cheaper but so much competition in the rental market we have not managed to get approved anywhere yet. As for landline we still have one, and as long as the $20 charge is credited each month making it essentially free, I'll keep it, cheaper then a 2nd cell phone, and good to have a phone at home when the other has the cell with them out and about. |

. We have a landline. In the event of an 'event' mobile/cell phone services are immediately overwhelmed . A landline makes sense. |

This is a quite poignant but depressing article. To think that someone actually uses a phone as a phone. :confused:I use a mobile for work exclusively and give out that # now for new personal contacts. As a result, this month has been 1800 odd minutes of cell phone usage and about 180 texts (Imessage texts don't count) but the amount of mis-understanding and mis-communication that goes on via text only conversations is staggering. I do find younger people who call me don't leave a voice mail. My motto is if you can't be bothered to leave a message it can't have been that important. Often times when I call someone and leave a message they call back a few minutes later with 'you called" without having listened to the message. Is it that difficult to listen to a voice mail, absorb the information and if required respond with further information. |

+1 If they think it's a message that needs to get through, they'll email or text. If it was a phone-call thing then they might have thought it was time-sensitive, but it can't be that important if they're going to leave a voice message that might or might not ever get picked up. I actually can't remember the last phone call I got that wasn't 'CRA need your bitcoin NOW', 'We're conducting a survey' or what I'm guessing was one of those (or their ilk) but performed in Chinese (turns out according to my phone it was while apartment hunting in August). Not had a landline for many years - last time I had one (2008) its main use was for the debts of the previous user of that number. I think we may have theoretically been paying line rental in 2015-17 because it made the internet cheaper, but never even looked for the phone jack never mind bought a handset to plug into it. |

The depressing part wasn't your choices. It was the fact that somebody made a big deal out of just using a phone as a phone and had to go on the equivalent of a juice cleanse to rid themselves of texting, snapchatting, twittering, instagramming etc on the phone instead of just using it as a phone.. The phone as a communication device for one on one discussions can be excellent. I do find though with text conversations there are so many misunderstandings and if somebody goes away from their phone the other person doesn't know why they aren't getting responses.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I listen to voice mail.
Most calls are from doctors, job interviews, government, and so on that generally wont be emailing or texting. Our plan only allows 3 voice mails at a time so cant exactly pile up. Lol |

Just finished watching The Godfather part III, thanks to my new-found cable provider. That's the first time I've seen it since its original release in 1990.
Superb to my mind, although it got voted down a bit according to IMDB. Can't see that at all, we're in it for Al Pacino after all, aren't we? Edit: Post was potentially unclear, I did originally see the film in a moving picture theatre back in early 1991. But my sound system here is better. :p |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Nice to know you lot have my back lol. So i checked to see how much the tix actually cost, the lower priced ones just over 100 bucks plus fees are down to single seats only, next tier goes to 200 bucks and more, so I shall have to wait until General sale tomorrow, I'll be working and not able to go online when the tix go on sale, so I shall be lucky if I can get tix at all. May just have to wait until the UK leg is announced.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Vancouver Fire had impressive response time. Under 5 mins for sure. They were arriving as we exited the building all we did was get the dog and put shoes on.
According to the strata the fire department says it was due to high co2 levels in the parking garage. Ended up outside for 70 mins or so. |

We have trouble finding places as there really is nothing affordable for our income level and always others with better income and job and not receiving part of their income via disability which further hinders us. Hard to compete in the housing market with our income. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Daughter was driving boyfriends car on Monday (she drives it more than him at the moment) when it made a loud clunking noise, stalled and wouldn't restart. CAA took it to the Canadian Tire they usually go to. She was told it needs a new engine. Panic sets in, I get a text 'Can I call you'd I always know something is wrong when I get that particular text. She couldn't get hold of of her boyfriend to tell him she had blown his 7 year old, still got a years finance to pay, car he loves up.
to cut a long story short, after 2 sleepless nights on their behalf I got a text, engine is being replaced as part of a recall and they get to drive the brand new shortage until theirs is fixed. Engine is on back order, so it could be a while. Christmas gift wish has gone back to Ikea gift cards rather than can I have cash please. Phew! |
