Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Schools really ought to come up with a way to deal with the math requirements for those who simply cannot learn advanced math.
Basic everyday useful math sure make sure people know it, but these advanced maths that are not even relevant to the program or job the program trains for, just a hurdle preventing people from gaining skills to better their job options. |

Panic sets in, I get a text 'Can I call you'd I always know something is wrong when I get that particular text. to cut a long story short, after 2 sleepless nights on their behalf I got a text, engine is being replaced as part of a recall and they get to drive the brand new shortage until theirs is fixed. Engine is on back order, so it could be a while. Christmas gift wish has gone back to Ikea gift cards rather than can I have cash please. Phew! Glad she got it sorted - I'm guessing it's a Ford, they've had a lot of recalls in the past year.. do make sure they ask if there's any other recalls on that vehicle (VIN # range) ... :) |

Employers know that even the least able pupils have reached a basic standard in subtraction, multiplication and division. They may not be able to do Mathematics but they do have reasonable numeracy. |

The Scottish education system deals with this very well... instead of just studying "Mathematics", there are two separate exams and qualifications - "Mathematics" and "Arithmetic". Arithmetic is compulsory for all pupils, while most do Mathematics as well, but not all.

Its algebra and above where I cant seem to get past and lordy lordy I have tried numerous times. (and fractions, they always confused me.) |

I am fine in normal everyday math, might be some paper to do long division and multiplication but I can do it without issue.

Algebra etc., I have no clue on (basic geometry I am ok with but not all those formulas etc.,) - fractions I can do the basics (though I dislike them and can't get my head around anything more complex, like compound fractions). Everything else to do with Arithmetic (as it was known when I was at school) I am fine with- I've been a book-keeper by profession in the past. My brain is more into words than numbers :) |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I just dont think everyone has a math brain for the advanced maths and our educational system should accept this.
There is just no reason for some of these programs to require algebera or pre calculus. Algebera is the only thing holding me back from some additional education.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
My stepdaughter (age 28) bought my mother in law a small record player today and tonight she was setting up to play a Bing Crosby xmas LP.
Everything was ready and she was about to set the stylus down. In the middle. I had a giggle as I told her it had to go at the outside edge. Part way through she had a question. Are there songs on the other side? :hysterical: |

Confirmed couldn't get into the apartment with lower rent, they say we cannot afford it, despite it being cheaper then what we currently pay.
Make too much for low income, not enough for co-ops and market rentals are far and few in anything we can afford. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
So we dont live in the best area of Vancouver, so leaving things outside on street level in front of the building is well going to lead to the items walking off.
Someone in the building ordered a TV on Amazon, and the amazon courier left it street level outside the building, and not even 10 minutes passed before someone walked up, took it and walked away. (not someone from the building, random person from the street.) How hard is to buzz a unit and be let into the lobby? I can't walk today, foot and knee are being a pain, and this is only working 2 days a week. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Sorry about your pain, JSM, but glad it isn't higher up.
Neither UPS, USPS, FedEx nor DHL ring bells here any more. Packages on left on the porch whether it requires signature or not. With one set of dodgy neighbors who have already been caught stealing two packages and once a gun from an open unattended truck parked in its driveway, it is amazing that when himself locks up for the night around 10 p.m. there is a package left at the door. Merry Christmas |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I hate Amazon sometimes. Before order guaranteed delivery by the 28th. After order date changes to a 2 week period in January 15 to 25. Now when trying to cancel a message saying an error occurred. Of course their online customer service has been no help at all.
Amazon is good, until there is an issue then they kind of suck. |

It's a random thread, no-one said anything about linking stuff, equally about not linking stuff.
Each to their own, leave it. |

I'm still working my way through The Simpsons.
Just watched one "24" style. Brilliant. Not only the real Jack Bauer but also Chloe O'Brian too. Superbly done. |

Never heard of him but I liked the new year resolution tweet from Richard Osman.
My New Year’s Resolution is to annoy less grammar pedants. |

I remember crash test dummies and that weird al one, seems so long ago now...lol
The worst design in my view for a shower is a 1/2 of it blocked by a piece of glass that doesn't move, which in turn makes cleaning the tub very difficult. Yes these things look pretty but they are not functional at all. |

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...793a56b94.jpeg It’s New Year’s Eve and I really hope the nutty woman sat next to me, drinking double martinis (is that a thing?) doesn’t puke. Hopefully she’ll make a quick getaway without paying her bill. Oh she’s just ordered another one, this could really brighten up an otherwise tragically dull evening. |

I really hope she’s not going to be violent, but I’m going to wait around to see. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Just watched the first Godfather movie on TV. I remember the first time I watched it, I was so horrified at the horse's head in the bed scene. This time I just thought how difficult it'd be to get all that blood off the sheets.
