I can't eat those! It's really weird.. It first happened when we were on holiday in Beesands, Devon, my first Cornish Pasty - violently ill... I didn't have another one until I was an adult in my 20's - and the exact same thing happened. Strange! OH flashback to then.. walking along the beach at Hallsands collecting pieces of sandblasted/tumbled glass, which my Dad told me had come from a church's stained glass windows after the village was 'swallowed' by the sea or that had fallen from the clifftop above.. walking among the buried houses.. :D (In reality they were probably broken bottles etc.) - blue glass, green glass, white glass, brown glass - we kept them in a jar with water so they would go translucent. Happy times :) |

Cornish pasties or a variant on them are popular in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which can throw you the first time you go there. |

Although one time I actually went into the kitchen to teach them how to make a cup that wasn't insipid and lukewarm.

Does he normally buy them? If so, had he already bought one? If not, was he unable to buy one because his wallet had been stolen? Does he stick with certain numbers if he does buy one and would he not have won with his numbers? And those are just the immediately obvious questions that come to mind. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
If someone nicked my wallet and then bought a lottery product and won $50k I would not expect a damn thing. I mean obviously I would hope to get the prize, but as long as all the fraudulent charges were reversed, I'd be OK. Giving it to charity is the best compromise.
It would be different if she nicked a briefcase stuffed with $50k in $100 bills. |

Apartment living sucks.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I loved apartment living. Lived in one for 40 years without moving apartments and our own home now for 3 years. I like having my own home but man, owning your own home is expensive if you are not handy.

I was lucky back in England. A brother was (more than) a plumber and then he was in business buying houses and converting them to flats to sell on. Anything house related he could do. He did me a new bathroom, fixed the roof, new kitchen, other plumbing stuff, external painting. He kept asking me if I wanted a new cooker (free) as a customer of his moved and didn't need him to do some work, letting him keep it. I kept saying no as my cooker was still good. Then I discovered it wasn't just a cooker, but a whole fitted kitchen with double oven cooker, whereas I just had a couple of second hand cupboards. So I had a nice new kitchen. Free. Over here I used to own a rental property and I had a good handyman. I use him when I need something at home. A bit more expensive than others but totally reliable. Peace of mind knowing I can call on him. |

Wow Rete - 40 years in the same apartment - that's amazing! I disliked living in an apartment intensely - I hadn't lived in one since I was about 20, until I came to Canada. I couldn't wait to get back to owning my own place. It's amazing how you learn to do things for yourself over the years - needs must, and all that! After I moved back to the UK, I had to quickly learn how to remove lathe and plaster and install new plasterboard / drywall and how to repair it; how to plaster walls; artex ceilings; use wood filler, repair window frames; replace window glass; support floor joists; paint, wallpaper, decorate, install shelving, gut the old and then put together and install new units in a kitchen, tile kitchen and bathroom walls and floors, fix squeaky floorboards, lay carpet and lino. The only thing I didn't do was rewiring (although I can rewire a plug / lamp / install a ceiling light or fan. a wall socket or a light switch); change/install a new lock... I drew the line at anything more than changing washers or replacing a sink /taps or ballcocks. I learned to clear blockages with a snake (or a wire coathanger) and bicarbonate of soda and vinegar! I didn't have the money to pay anyone, so it was learn or it didn't get done! The Readers Digest complete book of home / household maintenance was my go-to book (I still have it, lol). I enjoy DIY, get a great feeling of satisfaction when I achieve something - like repairing a curved ceiling after a water leak, using paper mache then plastering and painting it! I still have my own tool kit, lol... one of the first things I did on moving to Canada was to buy a basic kit and add to it! I must be a little strange, lol..:D |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Excluding the house I grew up in, I have never lived in any place longer then 2 years. Our current place is almost 2 so it will exceed 2 years soon.
Renting tends to be unstable these days. One rent increase can mean needing to find a new place or the unit is sold. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I was fortunate to have moved into an apartment which was only one bedroom but 1,000 sq. ft. in 1976. It was a ground level apartment in a six story building. Prime location for traveling to NYC by train. Good schools for the girls. The girls got the bedroom and the extra large foyer which was 9' by 12' became my bedroom with a day bed and was set up like a small sitting room before opening up to a living room which was 9' by 18' with a dining room off of that.
It was a rent stabilized apartment so the rent could not be increased above the mandated NYS rent control percentage. Moved in at $263 per month in 1976 and when I moved out it was just under $700 a month and that included my parking space and my gas for the stove. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
An apartment that size might be.more doable. Ours is around 548sq feet. Even the 2 bedrooms are only 710sq feet. The one before this was 410sq feet.
Its the small cramped space that annoys me. We have some rent control but unless you started renting 20 or 25 years ago and never moved, its not of much benefit as once a tenant moves the rent goes to market rate for the new tenent. This year the rent can go up I think 2% or 2.5% for existing rentals. New tenancies for our size unit are almost 2k a month now. American Airlines has a cool routing Palm Springs to Vancouver.
Palm Springs to Dallas Texas to Los Angeles to Vancouver. Granted most would hate that but id the fare had been lower (it was 333) I would have done it. Once when I was working at the airline still a couple of us spent a few days just flying so we could fly certain aircraft types. This was early 00s when airlines had variety still. Went San Diego to LA to Atlanta to Charlotte to Las Vegas to Indianapolis to Memphis to Minneapolis to San Diego. Once I was bored so went down to the airport took a red eye to NY, ate breakfast went to times square, statute of liberty, empire state building, world trade center had an early dinner took a 6p flight back home. When I lived in Milwaukee and I once went Chicago to Vegas to Columbus to Chicago. Oh the good days they were. I wish I could fly like that still. |

On the Airbus side I've flown A319/20/21/330/340. No A350 or 380 Embraer 170/190 MD80/82 BAC111 (back in the day). BAE146 Fokker F50/100 Dash 8-300 / Q400 Beech 1900 ... thats probably the smallest thing I've ever flown in. #Avgeek. Doubtless Aviator will be along in a minute to trump us all! |
