When one has gone to the trouble to beget a person one might hope that person would show a little regard for personal safety so as to save her father from having to go through all that unpleasantness again.

At his age i had to hide a couple of times from hitchhiking lift-givers who anticipated a little more gratitude than I was actually feeling, but never actually endured anything worse than a badly blistered face from falling asleep in the back of a pick-up on a sunny journey. At least sunburn is unlikely to be an issue this week.

My condolences on the stress and strain of all the begetting you have had to endure though.

Near Actinolite I've been to a restaurant on the north south road with huge portions called Kelly's. Is that still going?

Found it. it's called The Lost Highway The Lost Highway Documentary

That Indian Restaurant is closed I think but it's hard to tell as it was such a dump before. I had tasted food from there and it was ok ish so we drove out to get take out but didn't stay as it was so disgusting. It's near Marmora.

I hadn't heard of Kelly's but it's on Google Maps so is probably still going.

Going to drive to California next month to see family. First time driving all the way down.

First night will stay in a town called Weed in Northern California.

The name amuses me for some reason.

If you have the time the Oregon Coast is beautiful. If you need to replenish your hippy stock in tie dye fashions and other Woodstock like stuff, Eugene, Oregon is the place to go.

That is a long drive from Vancouver? to Weed. Hope your car has cruise control.

Google puts it at 11.5 hours so with gas and rest stops, I figure 13 or so hours.

I don't have a lot of time so need to do as much driving per day as I can so more days in So. Cal.

We would fly but the dog has to come with us and I have an aquarium to bring back from my mom's place.

We will. My other half is going as well so we will take turns driving.

Just have to order some tire chains to have in the car, Calif, Oregon have some mountain passes where chains might be required.

I have never driven down before and never seen the northern part of California so will be fun.

This time last year we were in Nice, France and we headed to a ski resort at 1700 metres above sea level in the French Alps in a rental car. The drive was beautiful but my cousin told me I'd need snow chains in the rental car in case there was heavy snow near the resort and the police would be there and would pull people over to make sure they had chains on.

Predictably there was no snow at all on the drive and actually the snow line was at basically 1700 metres so we never got the chains out of the trunk.

The people in the car rental place and my cousins were so surprised when I said I had never used chains in my life (only lived in Ontario in Canada) and I used special snow tyres instead.

Believe it or not there are videos online on how to put chains on...believe me I watched them but never needed to use the knowledge...

I wasn't aware that any mountain passes in Oregon or California required chains..I would have thought on the interstate the elevation is too low.

When we were in southern Oregon in 2008 we stayed here for two nights:. Quite expensive but lots of fun and a unique experience that our kids still talk about.

Siskiyou Summit in Oregon on I-5 can have chains required periods where winter tires alone are not sufficient.

The summit is 1,310 meters.

Can't predict the weather and my luck I would not have chains and they decide chains are required. So best to have them and not need them vs need them and not have.

Its the highest pass in I-5 but the lower passes in California can have chains required periods as well.

Clutches it with his front paws while pushing away with the back ones.

I woke just before 6.00 this morning and reached out to put CBC Radio on for the news, as I usually do when waking 'on the hour'.

On weekends and holidays it's some crappy music show (at least it's not all fiddle music anymore) but before I could turn off and go back to sleep they played back a Stuart McLean (now sadly no more) xmas tale. Christmas at the Turlingtons (with Dave and Morley - for a long time I thought he was saying Maura-Lee).

Wonderful stuff. I love the way he tells you innocuous, trivial detail and then it turns out to be a key plot point. It really is laugh out loud funny (the stories) except just after 6.00 am I had to stifle it...with difficulty. Except for the part where an "oh no" slipped out. :o

Here's part one with links to 2 and 3 on the youtube page.

A Christmas miracle this morning going to work.

Left home at 3:58 and arrived at work at 4:12.

I got every green light this morning, and I go through at least 20 or 30 of them.

I save 10% though... Well at a couple places I do, some of the vendors don't give staff discounts to airport workers.

All in all though the prices at YVR for most of the places are on par with what the same place outside an airport would charge, seems YVR doesn't permit vendors to price gouge on food.

That's good - Pearson is horrendously expensive. $10 for a sandwich. If I gave time I normally head for the lounge drink their gin.

That's what you'd pay for a decent sandwich in a cafe locally. Something pre-packed from a gas station is around $7

Really? Though what I saw didn't look decent at all. I probably shouldn't have given sandwiches as a comparison as it isn't something I would normally buy. Wine was definitely far more expensive $12 for a glass. Hence the lounge - it's worth the money.

A fair few pubs around Hamilton charge that for a glass (9oz).. one place I know charges $18!

Burger King is 8.90 or so for a whopper, fries and drink. About the same as downtown Vancouver.

Tim's was 1.50 for a muffin.

So...Doctor Who.
A rare decent story for Doctor Capaldi. There weren't many and that was a terrible waste. New writer, new Doc and hopefully better to come.

And a Tom Baker tale

A neighbor from years ago always delighted in telling the story of walking through the Adelaide hills as a child during Christmas holidays (late 1970s) when he spotted a gentleman riding a horse. As the horse got closer he couldn't believe his eyes - it was The Doctor.

Without missing a beat, Tom Baker looked down and asked "You haven't seen the Tardis have you? I could have sworn I left it around here. Do let me know if you find it."

Usually ballroom nowadays. Probably the 'strictly' effect. I see myself doing a quickstep. Or a nice foxtrot. Definitely not a rumba. Used to be other things, even line-dancing after I saw Thelma and Louise, but it's mostly ballroom now.

I quite liked it but the Christmas WWI trenches was mawkish as was the only nod to Christmas in the episode it was rather contrived.

But there was plenty to counteract that though. I thought there was much knockabout humour in it and it was good to see the earlier Tardis.

I'm pretty sure William Hartnell's Doctor never threatened to spank anyone. All that old fashioned talk before Jodie Whitaker takes over was well timed and a good way to make those against to maybe check themselves.
