We got worried about ourselves the night we made scrambled eggs for dinner and had wine with them  It's taken a long while for wine in boxes to reach other countries. I see some wine makers are having their bottles made of thinner and thinner, but strong, glass, thus reducing the weight. I keep a box of white and a box of Bodacious smooth red, these days - it's not bad .. (although I much prefer Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Family Reserve or Old Vines). |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Here in the UK the quality of boxed wine has massively improved. We recently bought 3 boxes of Sauvignon Blanc at different price points to do a blind tasting. First one was from an independent producer, worked out about £15 a bottle . Second was from Waitrose, worked out about £9 a bottle. third was from Aldi, at about £6 a bottle. By the time we'd finished them I couldn't have told you if it was wine, water or whisky.

The milk didn't taste good either, so people soon switched back to cartons. The company that produced the milk in bags held on for quite some time but eventually gave up. I think we still have the jug somewhere! |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Still sold in bags here. Fortunately cartons and bottles too.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I remember milk in bottles with cardboard tops with pull tabs, and a layer of cream right at the top.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Never add blueberries to muesli.
They go very nicely in some cereals, especially multi-grain cheerios where the cold milk really does something to them and they explode in your mouth like cherry tomatoes do. But I just discovered they do not go with muesli. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Well the heat was fixed for 2 days, went out today, and its back on. :banghead:
I don't think the handy person who comes to fix it, and tinkers around a bit, actually is fixing anything, maybe time to send in a heating professional. Replaced the thermostat again, well that didn't work last time for more than 2 days, and I doubt the brand new thermostat you put in back in May is the problem, whatever is supposed to keep the hot water from flowing seems to be the problem whatever that might be, assuming a valve or something somewhere. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Got a notice on the door today, on September 9th the complex will have no hot water due to needing to fix the heating system, so seems its probably not an issue with our unit, but the entire system, will suck not to have hot water for 12 hours, but eh better than baking, although now summer is over nearly, but hey better than never.

This was something that happened annually when I lived in an apartment building. At the end of summer, one evening the boiler/furnance would be shut down so it could be worked on the next day. Around 4 that next afternoon, it was operational again but the water was lukewarm until later that evening.

I made a gin and tonic and thought of the Gin Drinker's Line in Hong Kong, and my friend's late dad (and I guess my friend) George who was a Winnipeg Grenadier captured in Dec '41 and spent the next almost 5 years working like a slave and starving somewhere near Osaka. What a nice man. Time for gin number 3. Cheers, George!

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Canadian Tire for real had 5 gallons of hand sanitizer last year (maybe still) it $200 something for the bucket, but if broken down to the size of the $3 bottles, it did work out cheaper by a fair amount per bottle than buying smaller bottles if your the sort who can buy bulk savings to be made.

I wonder if I start chain smoking and drinking booze like water, if I can prematurely age to look 55?

Canada needs commercials like that.
Too many decades of telling young people college is the only way, and look now there is a lack of qualified trades people in many trades. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Canada needs more tech workers too it seems.
52% of the businesses surveyed reported not being confident in finding the talent they need in Canada. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
My sister worked for Bristol Myers in NJ and occasionally had to work the drug filling line. It is far too easy for something to go wrong with the bottles, vials, etc. and the entire batch will have to be discarded. One vial with black parcels is not something that screams "tracking" device.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I found a little piece of black rubber in a bottle of beer once, phoned the brewery, and they asked if I would save the bottle and the box it came in. A man from Molson's came around within a couple of hours with a case of beer for me.

I didn’t get ‘the joke’ either. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Not a tracking device. These particles are helpful microchips designed so that we can serve as data transmitters for 5G networks. And so that our bodies attract keys. Would actually be quite helpful. Now wish I got Moderna

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
This was on a reddit topic today, pretty cool photos from Vancouver from a different era, however my question is about photo # 5 Hotel American, but that part isn't what I am curious about, its the signs that say men and ladies, it doesn't appear to be rest room door, and well I can't think of why they would need to specify men and ladies on exterior sign to what appears to be an entrance door.
Vancouver looked like a much cleaner city back then compared to now, and certainly far less homeless it appears. https://www.bygonely.com/vancouver-f...2-greg-girald/ https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...30761de500.png |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
They did have separate entrances at some point. Male entrance may have been through the bar, which was considered a male territory.
Perhaps in 2070 people will be trying to figure out why the heck we had gender-segregated swim hours. |

California places that sell booze have licenses but they don't advertise it, but then basically any food place, 7/11, gas station, Target, Wal-Mart, grocery stores all sell booze so I guess there is no need to advertise it, and booze in California can be sold 20 hours per day, still crazy how restrictive booze sales are in BC and elsewhere in Canada, but from 2am to 6am, your out of luck, California is a dry state for those 4 hours. |
