I have no desire to live there.....I have heard the costs there are quite high.
Wonder how it compares to Vancouver?

People in BC like to cry how high our electricity is.
Fact is BC has some of the lowest rates in North America. Our bill with tax is about $40 Same use in San Diego before tax and its $110. One thing BC does not have is high electric rates. |

We are lucky in 2 regards here, BC Hydro has low rates, and there is not excessive fees/taxes added to the bill, there are some, but they are low. On Reddit for San Diego people keep posting about having electric bills in the hundreds, upwards of 800 for some for 1 month, but the rates there are 27 cents to 55 cents per kWh, depending on total usage and tier level, its insane....One poster has a 1 bed apartment and they were saying they had a 300-400 bill, insanity, if we had bills like that, we would not have electricity....lol |

Yes indeed. Electric costs are one thing that keeps me iffy on Ontario, with colder winters and such, concerns me we would have problems paying electric bill there.

You only pay for electricity for anything you plug in, basically. House rental is a different matter, that's when it can get scarily expensive - especially if you have air conditioning. Heating is generally gas powered in house rentals, so keeping warm in winter isn't an expensive matter.. keeping cool in summer can be!
:) We have always had electric heat in our apartments so we get to pay for it as electric is rarely included in rent. In older apartment units heat is sometimes included depending on the source of the heat, some older apartment complexes use I think a boiler type system that heats the whole building vs electric baseboard in newer apartments where each unit is independent of of one another and tenant has complete control over the heat. Water including hot water is included in our current unit, the building uses a central boiler for hot water, but some apartments will have electric hot water tanks in each unit and tenant pays for it, just depends on the building. We have natural gas for the stove top, its not metered by individual unit just the building as a whole, so strata covers the cost of natural gas, this is the first time ever having natural gas in an apartment for me, vast majority are electric cook top. Summer isn't so bad with our portable a/c negligible increase really, its heat in winter that can add a nice premium to the bill. Electric baseboard heating is norm here for apartments and its not exactly cost efficient and you end up with a whole wall area you cannot place any furniture against which is annoying. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I think DBT would be more effective when counseling is included in the mix to actually help worth through the problems causing the issues at hand people may have. Skills group alone is better then nothing, just not sure it alone will work to the full potential since the problems that cause the issues are still not worked on or resolved.
In the various groups I am in those who seem to be doing the best are also the ones who have long term counseling sessions to work through issues bothering them. |

The upstairs rooms here have baseboards - don't know if that is original or supplemental - but they're all on the window walls where one would be less likely to have furniture anyway. The vents for the heating/ac (up and down) are all next to walls...granted not the same length as a baseboard heater but still 'in the way' nevertheless. It was the same at my old duplex with the vents from the previous oil system, except one in the kitchen was right in the middle of the floor. which could be problematic for dining chairs/table. |

I was thinking more along the lines of vents like these which has been my experience with forced air systems, either placed on the top of the wall near the ceiling, sometimes in the ceiling even or in the floor, but their small size keep them from being a problem in the floor. Charming Luxurious Home Architecture by Semple Brown The baseboard heater takes up 90% of 1 wall, so way more a nuisance and doesn't even heat well. Realized today our rent is 3 times higher now vs just 5 years ago, if only income would keep up with the cost of basic needs. Housing costs are why we are so badly off, its the single biggest cost and nothing affordable left, well affordable to those on our income level, according to the out of touch city we pay affordable rent for our location and apartment size.... But of course the city bases it off median income forgetting a decent % of people dont earn the median income or above, so yeah not affordable. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Forced air just heats more evenly. Baseboard its warm only on the side of the heater.....other side of the room is chilly at times as is the bedroom and bathroom as for some stupid reason they only put a heater in the living room.
Its cheapness on the developers part. Flipside my dads house doesnt even have a heater of any kind which post WW2 1940s houses was common in parts of So. California. By the 1960s forced air was common and by 90s builds a\c was standard. Heat and a/c became a needed item as the citys grew and moved east away from the coast so warmer and colder vs the coast where most people lived up to the 1950s. My dad on the coast can be 75F but simply going inland 10 miles and presto 90F. Same in winter overnight low 50F and 35F and frost 10 miles inland. Miss living. So much to do there to stay occupied without needing money. Weekly free museum entry somewhere, lots of tide pools along the coast to explore" desert an hour away, world class zoo. Never bored there that is for sure.

While that's true, it also depends on what you want to put there and where the vent is. If you have a 12 foot long wall and a 7 foot sofa, the vent need only be in the middle third and that rules out the sofa against that wall. |

260sq feet. Likely DTES seems decent just a bit too small for 2 adults. 1k a month still. Singles only no couples. Kind of stupid how things work. We cannot afford rent but cannot relocate long distance at this time due to cost of doing so and the fact I can only access DBT if in the city of Vancouver. Looked into co ops once actually had some vacancies. 1,000 a month non subsizied. Easily affordable compared to the 1750 we pay now. Sorry need a min income of 2,400 a month. Finding we make too little for a good chunk of non subsizied co ops. We have found some we have the needed income for, some we havr successfuly made it to the wait list and others didnt approve us to get on the wait list. Not really a wait list since they only keep you app on file 1 year then have to reapply. Housing is dififcult to find these days. Doctors notes annoy me. Mostly due to the fact the piece of paper costs $30. |

Old job wants a doctor clearance before deciding to rehire me or not. Doctor doesnt think I should go back to work so wont provide clearance so that is that.
Wife had an interview sked today at 9am. The person never showed. Then said would call at 11am and never did. Waste of wifes time this morning. |

Does your doctor understand the financial constraints / issues you have if you are unable to work? Is it that they won't clear you for the specific job you were doing before or would they consider giving you clearance if it was for a different position, maybe? Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
There is no position within a ground handling operation aside from management that wont require standing. All ramp jobs do.
At the end I was a lead so was not longer doing the loading, I oversaw the flight, made sure things were done correctly, maintained count of bags and submitted the final loading numbers. Still required standing on concrete though. I quit anyhow so they are not under any obligation to rehire me. A new employer would not know of medical and mental health stuff so would not need a doctor in such a case. Just not sure what other jobs I would do okay in. I know anything customer service involvement will end not so well. Same with hotels and really any customer service type role. I literally have no interpersonal skills which is a major barrier and trigger for a meltdown. Reason I last longer on the ramp is largely due to not having to deal with customers and the issues that arise from that. Easier to deal with a few co workers each day vs dozens and possibly humdreds a day in a customer job where its likely several a day will trigger my symptoms. Its not unusual issue though, everyone in my group talks about the same issues and well nobody is the group is currently working due to difficulty in keeping a job. Ill just have to hope a suitable job is out there. Not a lot of options for a low skilled/low educated borderline who lacks interpersonal skills and has emotions akin to a roller coaster with highs, lows and quick and sudden changes. I do still have the meeting set up for Wed so ill know more then. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Why was it that you quit?
How about factory/assembly work, is that possible? Tyre fitting? Something physical where you don't need to deal with others. |

I hurt my foot and could barely walk, foot has since healed, and mental health also played a role which is usually the biggest cause of loss of employment. For people with borderline the best jobs are the jobs that offer a structured environment, low pressure but those kinds of jobs are difficult to find, but they are the most ideal for long term success with this disorder. While I am in a DBT skills group, it does not include therapy, so I am still on my own trying to figure out how to fix myself and resolve lingering issues and trauma that led up to all this. |

Joys of living in the edge of DTES, someone stood outside on the sidewalk under our window (we are 2nd floor.) Screaming for a good 3 hours then stopped.
Happens often. One lady every night at 1am for about 10 minutes walks around screaming Tristian over and over then stops. Can set your watch to her. Last night though with the guy screaming never that long before. I did at one call the police but unsure if they sent a car or not. Never saw one but cant say for sure. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Doctor would clear me for the foot no issue. Its mental health where she wont and that is what the company wants as I told them about some parts of my struggles. Lesson learned dont tell employer or potential one about any mental health struggles. The doctor feels the stress of working would not be worth any benefit. But she is only taking into account my slip into a deep depression which is related to not working in something I like and being incredibly bored which brings me down further. This is where having a therapist would be beneficial. A GP cannot adequately treat borderline and so they focus on the depression which is about the only aspect a GP can possibly treat but as borderline depression isnt typically responsive to medications not much they can do there either. Nothing I can do from my end at this point.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I only told them in an attempt to get hired back to explain the sudden departure.
Nornally I dont tell employers at all. Just trying to get a job back I enjoyed. They didnt do anything to cause my departure so the company did no wrong and well companies have no obligation to hire back people who quit. The DBT program is 6 months. Before funding cuts it was at one point 12 months. 12 mos is the minimum the creators of DBT intended. But better then the 4 week program in another city I lived in. Not many 1 year programs left in Canada. I think ON might still have one. A big part of the problem stems from boredom. Vancouver isnt exactly full of free fun entertaining things to do...lol... Depression I have learned is not the corret term for the feelings of empty and numbness and emptiness that I feel. Its Hypo-arousal and no medication can fix it. Explains why anti depressants have never worked for me.

I hate this building and to think people pay 600 to 800k to buy here.
Got home and fob system is down. Nobody can get their car in or out. Cannot get to our units or leave our units as elevators are not working. Stuck in lobby with frozen foods and so pissed off. I hate apartment living. There are no positives to this BS. Why do they permit buildings to be built with no access via stairs except to exit? People have been stuck for 2 hours now without access to their unit. Guess my ice cream will melt. Keys dont fail fobs and electronics do why is there no key access? @ Jsmth321
Do you really trust in your doc? Reason for asking is that I was diagnosed with 'burn out' about 12 years back and was put on 100% disability for a few months. My employers started to kick when I said that I would be taking a vacation, and my doc responded directly to them quite emphatically that it was his call, and he had decided that yes, I could take some time off. My point being having trust in your doc, this is to me a must have. |

I can understand why pilots may lie about mental health issues, nobody wants to lose their career and livelihood and at almost 40, would be difficult to maintain the same lifestyle starting over in a new career, but prison seems like it would be even worse, rather lose my job and tell the truth vs lying on a government form.
If you have mental health concerns just have to accept certain jobs are off limits. FAA is comparing VA medical records to FAA medical forms to catch pilots who have lied. https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt-...qewPaQRC8QpGL/ |

Piff Poff - what's this about a '59 Beetle, in your signature? No, I'm not in the market for it, but my second car was a '59 Beetle, and my heart goes all piff-poff at the very thought of one. Was that the first model with the wide back-window? I forget. I bought mine in '61, I think; in those days we used to beep at each other when we passed on the road. This was in Queensland, Australia. Then when I left for Europe I bought a Beetle in Hamburg - a crash-gearbox of I don't know what year - and it took me all over. And in Mexico City in the later '90s all (?) half (?) the taxis were Beetles. Ahhh. At my age, I'm allowed to say with feeling, "They don't make them like that any more!"

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Hi Gordon, it does have a bigger back window, but to be honest it's so long since I've seen it revealed I couldn't tell you much else! Hubby bought it when he was on a gotta have everything that comes up for sale phase with the intention of putting it back together. He went mad and bought too much stuff. Neither of us are too enamoured with beetles so it's one that we are not worried about being rehomed.

Just watching old episodes of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ mainly because I was on the phone to my mother for 2 hours this morning and the home sickness has kicked in for a bit. shocked to hear Uncle Arthur refer to the local store as the ‘Pak* store’ guessing this was in the 1980s it was acceptable back then??? Even as a kid in the 90s I was always under the impression it was not a word to use |
