Schools were open yesterday so with temperatures for today forecast to be around 10c (that's plus 10) and rain (that's rain, not freezing rain) imagine my surprise when I woke this morning to CBC radio news telling me that schools throughout the province were closed today.

Apparently the issue is "anchor ice" that the plows have been unable to get rid of and that rain will just freeze and make the surfaces worse.

It seems strange that in 14 winters here I've never heard of this affecting even part of the province let alone all of it. There's usually quite a difference in weather for the north and south halves as well as west and east.

What I thought was overnight soft snow on the front steps is actually hard -ish.

Is that with the windchill ? I think -30 or -40 air temp in the Hammer would be record breaking...with the wind chill included it is possible.

-40 would be a new record for my car thermometer. I took a picture at -35.5 before realizing that -36/37 is an annual event.

At that level of cold there isn't much of a difference between the system you think in versus the one everyone else in this country under the age of about 60 uses I think you are secretly a 'leaver'./daily mail reader'

I think my record here is about -33 c late at night on the outskirts of Ottawa.

There is something to be said for being confined to the sofa with a broken ankle. I haven't donned either hat or glove all winter.

I have an appointment in a week after which I hope I will be able to put some weight on that leg. It doesn't have much movement at the moment so suspect physio will be required before I can walk properly.

We are friends with one, his family own a large beef farm (grass fed, organic etc.) near us. He came to a party at our place and brought a gift bag with minced beef in it - which was a first for me. It was delicious though.

I lived with one. We mainly ate parts of non-compliant patients.
