No one has to like Canada. Some do, some don't and some are indifferent. No one has to like Vancouver. Some do, some don't, though there seems to be fewer that are indifferent. Everyone's experiences are equally valid. However, if everyone's opinion is equally valid they are not equally valuable.
Our Calgary members get upset, and rightly so, if the rest of us who have never been to AB portray it as a right wing, red neck culture free dessert. Equally, I get annoyed whenever Vancouver is mentioned and somebody posts that it is crap because their second cousin, twice removed, went there once in '67 and it was raining. The opinion of someone like, say, dboy who has lived here for years is surely more valuable to a reader with a genuine interest or need to know.
One thing that does frustrate me form time to time is people posting from a position of ignorance. We are all ignorant about lots of things but surely the most basic self-awareness requires us to know what we actually know, and what we don't know. When posters post their misinformation as fact then they need to be corrected.
The OP's comments about Richmond are particularly unpleasant and unwarranted. He opens this thread by saying he wants to to give readers a rounded picture of life in Vancouver/Canada, but these sort of ill informed rantings seem to be motivated by anything other that a desire to be helpful (and I'm doing my very best to avoid the "R" word here).
Canuckroo's contention that you need a family income of $200,000 to survive in Vancouver may not be so unpleasant, but it is equally misleading. Yes, you can struggle on $200,000 if you chose to live that kind of lifestyle, but you can live a decent and comfortable life on a lot less. It is a bit like a new immigrant to London buying a waterfront flat on the Thames for UKP1M and then telling everyone that if you don't earn UKP200,000 a year don't bother coming to the UK.

1: The schooling system, my child has regressed significantly in the public school system, here. We simply don't have the funds to pay for private schools & disorganisation, coupled with the mantra that everyone must pass, has resulted in our child going backwards. This is hugely, hugely worrying.
How can your child be going backwards? Have they forgotten everything they've learned? There's nothing to stop you helping your child challenge themselves at home, thus giving them an advantage over their peers.
It's too easy to blame something else when maybe there are other options.
2: The weather. If you're not surprised that its cold here, then shame on you, but if someone had told me that it's actually uncomfortably cold from November to April, which amounts to half the year, I would have reconsidered. This is one area where I think expats & Canadians are a bit disengenius with. The biggest issue with this aspect is that kids (and I'm not alone, here) find the kids devoid of imagination on what to do with themselves unless it contains a mouse & a screen.
3: House prices. I note the latest edition of CMHC shows that it takes the best part of 80% of your household income to pay household bills- including mortgage. I've started paying more attention to this monthly edition & it has helped me to understand why we are struggling so much financially. In T.O & Calgary its around 70% & Ottawa & Montreal 50%.
Unless you are both earning 6 figure salaries, the possibility of getting stuck in a financial rut are very high & we all should know what financial issues can do to a marriage.
I'll leave it at that.
I'll leave it at that.
Live within your means. If you're spending too much, work out what isn't absolutely essential and stick to it.
A positive attitude gets people through the arse end of life much better than a negative one, so do their friends. Even when we do tease them about driving off with the gas pump still in the fuel tank.

I agree with R I C H. Canadian weather is different even within the same Province. Winter in Toronto feels warmer and milder to me than the same winter in more rural Peterborough or Belleville does, yet all three are in Ontario. I'm sure there are differences between winter in Vancouver and Whistler (B.C.), Montreal and Quebec City (Qc), Lethbridge and Fort McMurray (Ab), Ottawa and Windsor (On) and many other places.
You dont need to go that distance, there is often a 2 degree difference between the SE and NW of Calgary. Canmore (to the west) and Okotoks (to the south) both have less blue sky than Calgary, I'm moving 2 hours east of Calgary and the average temp for December is 20 degrees lower

when you’re in the shit it’s very hard to focus on the positives as its the negatives that are giving you the problems and they need fixing, and in some severe cases it can be hard to find something positive that’s worth focusing on when you dealing with a crisis
I personally wouldn’t give a rats arse about the pretty mountains if I had hungry kids to feed
I’d suggest a pragmatic attitude will serve you better; looking on the bright side of life can be kept for singing whilst hanging around on crucifixes

It’s a great statement, but lacks any touch with reality

I just want to know where they live. Vague references to "BC" or "Van" aren't helpful because it VARIES, people. It VARIES.
