I think you'll find that it was Jean Chretien who made that decision. The country, in the form of the electorate, turfed him out and the subsequent leader has done his best to reverse it.

That'll depend on your estimate of the size of Canadian soldiers.

This was not my quote - it was Triumphguys quote.

At the end of the day, a life is a life, it doesn't matter if it was 100, or 1000 and I'm not going to argue over figures?!

It is. Something having been cut, it was 'sawed off' in the past tense. Same as 'Sawn'

I hear people say there are some things you shouldn’t make jokes about. I disagree, although there is context and timing, human existence is full of tragedy. We’re bombarded with cancer, child abuse, terrorism, war or natural disasters, making fun is like sticking your two fingers up to them.

I don't disagree with this but you should know your audience before you begin.

There's a time and a place and people need to understand that.

I believe that if you've lived in Canada for some time; have become a citizen; and pay Canadian taxes, then you have as much right as any other Canadian citizen to take the p1ss out of the country and mention its shortcomings.

Also, if you want to annoy Canadians, just accuse them of 'Americanizing' things. Especially their language. They like that.
Not a lot.

And this is perfectly normal and healthy - for people to move around, to experience different cultures, to build up their experience and TOLERANCE for others. If we make our home in Canada, I will encourage my daughter when she grows up to try living in another country/ies -it gives more dimensions to one's life and personality. But I would be deeply upset if due to my pedagogical failings she grew up bitter and unable to appreciate the world in all its colours.
It would be silly to be against constructive criticism though, and I am all for seeing the negatives and trying to correct them when we can - it's 'them' and 'us' attitude that shocks me in many of the expats on this forum and here, in the UK. Some people tend to confuse being unable to adapt with preserving their cultural identity. It has been said here before, and I agree - you make your own happiness or misery regardless of where you live..
The topic of this thread is very good actually, it can give a lot of insight for people who are new to Canada if the ones who have lived there for a while share their real blunders due to language/cultural differences. But it was quickly made a place for some petty sneering.. I hope it will continue in a more kindly humorous tone.

The same humor that worked great in the UK does not go down well here. Cityhog, you are 100% proof of that.

Lets take a small event that happened to the Chinese cockle pickers years ago in Morecambe, being that we are from Blackpool, we, and plenty of my mates got txt jokes. Thing like "two sharks, one said to the other, fancy going to Morecambe for a Chinese". In the UK, these type of jokes, you can also incl, Fred West humor and all the other crap, ect, are the norm, it's the way we get on with life in the UK. Make fun of the bad stuff. Well the way some get on, i aint never sent, just received the jokes.

Now obviously to me CH tried to use the same type of humor at the office/workplace. Well that just won't work here.

The moral of this thread then is......DON'T DO IT.....

Disclaimer:
This is only my own opinion and not a statistical fact that i can back up with Googled facts. I did not write, send or condone any bad txt or internet joke regarding Fred West or the Chinese, i do not have a grudge against the Chinese, i just used the joke to show how jokes are perceived in the UK.
If i have filmed where you live and you have got all upset and spilled your wine, then i am sorry in advance...."OOPS wrong fred."
