Avoiding unnecessary cultural misunderstandings
#33
The best way to avoid ‘unnecessary cultural misunderstandings’ is, in my experience, by having full respect to your host country and its culture as well as remembering there is just a teeny tiny possibility that to people around your high horse might look like a sick donkey. True intelligence and wit do not need advertising, do not require belittling any individuals or societies and aren’t usually offensive. So many people of this forum stated that they ‘fled’ Britain because of the influx of ‘unworthy’ immigrants from elsewhere – I am one of them – a naturalized British wife of a Zimbabwe born Scotsman, but I would never allow myself to direct even a fraction of offensive, arrogant and narcissistic remarks that you can read here on BE at the British equivalents of ‘Cradles’! You are the first generation, ‘just’ hating it over there in Canada, will your children be planting bombs in the Canadian subways by any chance?!
You moved to THEIR country, which at least at some point seemed attractive enough to you to move over as a result of THEIR labour; you/your parents f…..d up your own country to the point you couldn’t live there anymore – so either come back, take responsibility and make sure your country becomes what you want it to be, or stop whining and backbiting and enjoy someone else’s hospitality. Btw, is someone is not laughing at a joke, it’s usually the sign of a bad joke…

What you’re facing here is that Canadians, and Americans for that matter, love to dish it out under the misguided opinion that they’re being funny or clever but when you give back to them writ large, in a much more confident way, they get the hump.

Talking of cultural misunderstandings, I like your 'reverse burqa'.

Oh it was something about the (tiny) size of the CA army. This guy was proud of his soldiers fighting in Afghanistan along with Americans. I also made fun of RCMP. I saw a doc film where RCMP were chased and killed by armed teen criminals in rural Manitoba or somewhere in CA.
So the army that's lost more men than the Brits in Afghanistan? The army that fought alongside the Brits in 2 world wars? The Army (read Navy) that kept Britain supplied during WWII. The army that liberated Holland, or which took Vimy Ridge when the British army couldn't. Do you mean that Army? The army that DIDN'T go to war in Iraq because the country made a moral choice about that particular engagement - a choice which the end results have borne out?
If you live in someone else's house don't criticize the way they run their household, or compare it to the house you chose to leave.

Not something I would expect anyone to find humour in.

Canadians hold their Armed Forces in great respect. It is accepted to walk around in uniform here whereas in the UK forces personnel are subjected to harassment http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ghanistan.html

I think it's possible that the incident being referred to is this one.

I agree with this part and think about it a lot actually. The fact that westernised quality of life is what we're used to in the UK does not mean that we should overlook the hard work of Canadians who have built this place. Nobody "deserves" to be here just because it's similar to the old country. It's bloody hard work to build a country from nothing and to be allowed in to live in this place they built is very gracious.
