Goa hopeful of being allowed to issue VoA
While welcoming the decision of the Indian government to ease restrictions on tourist visas that mandated a two-month gap between consecutive visits by foreign nationals to India, the tourist trade in Goa hopes that the Centre will heed Goa's request to be allowed to issue Visas on Arrival (VoA). Nilesh Cabral, Chairman, Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), described the decision to ease the two-month gap as a "good thing, a good step" but only the first step. Cabral said he is very happy that the Government of India has heeded the several requests from Goa government and the Goa tourism trade to ease the restriction. "Now, I hope they consider our request to enable Goa to issue VoA as that would be immensely beneficial to Goa tourism," he was quoted as saying in a report in The Times of India. Ralph de Souza, Spokesperson, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), said that this will particularly help Goa to cater to the 80 per cent Finnish tourists who visit Goa. Presently, if they want to avail of VoA, they have to come via Mumbai, which adds to their cost. "If we can issue visa on arrival in Goa, the sagging Scandinavian market will be revived," Souza said. Problem is Goa and Goans, in general, do not do "culture".... Witnessed with my own eyes, as in the wonderful concert at "the Beethoven House" in Siolim, wonderful evening and well attended - dead the next year Events at Fundacio Oriente in Panjim, well organised and very worthwhile, but mainly foreigners bothered to go..... Lets face it, Goa's two most famous artists are cartoonists, say no more  . |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
What about Wendel and Remo ? Its looking up though for the culture vultures here who dont appreciate music for Vacuum Cleaners as in Techno and Trance. The Windsong Festival will actually have real musicians other than, " self taught
bedroom re-mixers..! "Read in todays papers that the Nigerians are rapidly becoming an endangered species in Goa due to knifing s and a predisposition to Columbian Marching Powder and an inability to keep a low profile, especially in South Anjuna and Vagator. |

A 23-year-old student who was brutally gang raped by up to seven men has told her family she wants to live as protests rage in India's capital in response to the attack. Re: In To-day's Newspapers
'There were around seven people in the bus, who first started teasing him,' he said. 'Then they started harassing the victim to which he reacted and resisted.' Angered by his resistance, they hit him with iron rods and other blunt objects found in the bus before taking the woman into the front cabin of the bus and raping her. 'Five to seven persons attacked the couple,' the uncle added. 'When my nephew tried to save the girl, he was beaten with iron rods, the girl was then gang-raped.' Sources said that her clothes were cut with a blade which also sliced her abdomen and she was hit around the head. The man's uncle continued: 'I saw the medical report. It says that she was raped by each person twice and then they dumped them at a secluded place in Mahipalpur after robbing them all their valuables including mobile phones.' The assailants eventually stripped the pair and dumped them on the side of a road. THE REASON SHE HAS DAMAGE TO HER INTESTINES AND IS NOT EXPECTED TO LIVE, IS THAT AFTER THE GANG RAPE, THEY USED THE IRON BAR ON HER (according to original reports) On a bus, in broad daylight, with other passengers present........... India Shining. |

The patronising attitude of Sheila Dikshit in her interview with Barkha Dutt. What has India become? In its treatment of sexual offences India is backward ..... with the attitudes borne out in the UK some 50 years ago....attitudes that began to be seriously challenged in the 1970s and attitudes that began to be eradicated in the 1980s. It is merely an indication of how a great number of this male dominated nation of India view the fairer sex in general...isn;t it? Dread - x |

No, I disagree with your last point, women in general are treated as people to be cared for and venerated but (not necessarily equal and able to lead independent lives). India was one of the first countries to have a woman Prime Minister, there was a higher percentage of women in the professions in India than in UK until fairly recently. But this attitude is not across all social groups and poor women suffer more (as in many countries). Obviously there are men who have the attitudes you suggest and there will be too many of them, (there will be too many of anything bad in India due to the population). What is needed is Congress politicians women and men to get off their bottoms and actually do something instead of just thinking about the next election. |
