Has anybody got a copy of yesterdays Herald? There was an article I read yesterday (Monday) from a Goan in Panjim complaining about racism in a restaurant in Candolim.
This letter is "surprisingly" not on the online version of the Herald and I no longer have my copy. Although I accept that racism is wrong in all aspects, if you live in Goa (India) as a "Foreigner" you have to tolerate racism as this is practised from the lowest bread seller upwards - my (Goan) friend calls it a "skin" tax. It is even sanctioned by the government - 1 price for Indian nationals, 1 (higher) price for foreigners. I would have liked to send a counter argument I accept the rebuke, and should not have named the (assumed) restaurant. There seems no way of editing a post otherwise I would retract that part of the post. I would agree with you regarding some elements of the Indian tourists being decidedly unsavoury and rude particularly to the staff in Restaurants, harassing people on the beach and wandering around in their underpants. There are also some pretty unsavoury British (& Russian) tourists who whilst not harassing people on the beach (that I have seen) wander around the streets in bikinis and swimming trunks, are noisy and rude to waiters, and generally loutish in behaviour. What I suppose I am saying is that this type of behaviour comes from all sorts of tourists and cannot be levelled at any particular group based on origination. Anyway I take it no can quote the original article |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
The Goan newspapers and other media are full of him.....
He looks like an Italian, he moves like an Italian, his mannerisms are italian, out of the spotlight, he dresses like an Italian......... But stick an Indian name on him and Hey-Ho, hes the next saviour of India! If anyone out in Goa at present bumps into him, say "Bon Journo" and ask why real Italians have some of the worst visa entitlements in the whole Eurozone? Could it be his families way of trying to prove they are not Italian? |

Many retired tourists have also worked hard for their pensions for years and paid contributions to them. All these people spend lots of money in shops, shacks, restaurants, hotels and wherever.
Tourists on "doles" (job seekers) have to sign on every two weeks in the UK to obtain their "dole" and be actively looking for work. So they are hardly in Goa living on "dole". Government departments paying "doles" have recently had a major overhaul using outside agents who are very often interviewing claimants, so these tourists will hardly be in Goa for 5 or 6 months. Mr Mickky needs to get his facts right and bring himself up to speed before he makes insulting comments and tars all tourists with the same bush! Banyan. Will someone kindly please donate 'Muppet Miccky' a very large supply of toilet roll so that he can permanently wear one around his neck and mop up the crxp that comes out of his mouth !!!! Dread - gag him ! x |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Two very nice letters in the paper today thanks to the Herald. Was the first one yours Noni,(DOLES!!!)?
:rofl::rofl: GC;) loving it:thumbup: Doles’ indeed! Chesh Black, by email As a long-term UK stayer in Goa I take great exception to the comments of the squeaky clean incorrupt Tourism Minister about regarding Britons living in Goa on the "doleÂf. First, there is no such thing. "Dole" was a colloquial term given to unemployment benefit in the UK, which are now known as Benefits or Allowances. Second, I fail to see how anyone living on such a pittance could possibly afford to fly to Goa and live here. No one I know in Goa is here on that basis. All the people I know live on income from investments, savings or mostly pensions paid for over years of hard work. We all spend quite a lot of money on all manner of local amenities and services. With comments like these and ludicrous visa regulations, you will see a mass exodus of people who help to maintain your economy. Double-faced stance Christine Boomer, UK Your article ‘Three-fold Hike in UK Visa Fees’ (Herald, 22 Jan) astonished me. If the UK allows elderly people who will, when resident, be able to use the National Health service free of cost, to claim generous benefits and even provide interpreters for such a small sum of money, it’s no wonder the UK is groaning under the weight of these costs. Those of us from the UK on the other hand cannot get 5- or10-year or lifetime visas for India. At present the maximum stay allowed is 180 days and when we leave the country we are not allowed back in for 2 months. We pay for any healthcare we need in India, we support ourselves without any help from the Indian Government, and spend thousands of pounds while we are here. Yet the Goa Tourism Minister says we are spongers because we receive pensions – for which we worked hard for 40 long years. |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Even the Bombay hoteliers are kicking up a fuss, so why do we hear nothing from the Goans who stand to lose so much more! I mean the (Prevention of) Tourism Minister seems to think it's a great idea.

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Read somewhere (always reading things on the net) that its only because they have halved the rates and its bank holiday and all indians are here, there was a local guy who has a small hotel commented on the story online in the herald and he stated that things are getting very bad here and will get worse now because of the visa problems.
They are looking through those rose tinted glasses again!!!!!!! |

The Russian Invasion of Goa
27 Jan: Finam Light (Russia). Russians are buying property and doing business in Goa, making it more Russian every year … They are attracted by the excellent beaches, low prices and unique culture … According to the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Pacheco, Russians are the worls’s most cheerful and peaceful tourists … There is another interesting category of Russian emigrants in Goa, downshifters, who rent out their homes in Russia and with that income are able to live very comfortably in Goa again thanks to goanvoice.org.uk. :sneaky: are the Russians allowed to purchase property and do business in Goa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
before anyone in Goa starts relying on Russians to replace other foreign tourists they should read today's Heraldo:
Expressing its outrage over the “disgusting†incident, the Russian Embassy in a strongly worded statement demanded “strict and efficient†measures immediately by India to ensure the safety of Russian citizens failing which it said it will issue advisory to its tourists to refrain from visiting Goa. The Russian embassy said, “we are shocked and deeply outraged by the reports about the disgusting incident in India’s well-known resort in Goa when a 9-year old child from Russia became another victim of a rapist....The Embassy reiterates its grave concern over the growth of criminal cases against the Russians in Goa.
