TERROR ALERT

US, UK warn citizens against visiting India

'.....The US and UK advisories follow previous ones complaining about New Delhi's new visa regulations which require tourists to maintain a two-month gap between the time they exit the country and re-enter it.

Indian security agencies view the new alerts as "retaliatory". External Affairs Minister SM Krishna had on Wednesday dismissed the alerts saying that many foreigners visit and India and they need not fear.

"Let me scotch all speculative reports that India is a country infested by terrorists. I would like to reject this totally. You find thousands of foreigners who have been freely going about wherever they feel like. I would like to assure the foreign tourists, visitors and others that they don't have to worry about it," Krishna said in New Delhi on Wednesday.'

Perhaps Mr Krishna likes cake ......and eating it !!!!

in today's Herald Mirror I read that Lionel Messias, king of corruption statistics, is a reader of BE.

Hi Lionel,
many of us are under some Government of Goa-induced stress, and a few of us get a bit tetchy, especially at sundowner time - but mostly we mean well.
Welcome to the site.

 can you link the article andy please!
Perhaps we can have free Honey Bee,'noffi, or Kingfisher on prescription to help us with the stress.

We love the place, otherwise we would not be fighting visa and property issues, but sadly it is now taking a toll on us all.

You cannot link to this as it is in the "Mirror" supplement and that is not available on-line, yet another stupid inadequacy of the puppet Goan press.

Also this thread is turning distinctly "apologist", an unnecessary trend. Following this logic we will all have to start watching what we say for fear of upsetting one person who is simply "looking in"?

That is silly, because if we tell the truth, they will have to accept it. You know we all love our time in Goa and India, it is just the way we are treated when we spend our hard earned money here, the continual stress we are under. We ask for nothing from their Government only respect. Not like good old UK who hands out housing and benifits to every tom dick and harry.

Well this bloke has got the situation right

Letter in the Herald 4th Jan 2010

Saving Goa
F Wright, Arpora

Around 4 years ago the registry was closed to Brits wanting to register their deeds for properties bought from Goans. The sole intention was to stop Brits buying up all the land. But this has not stopped others from buying land and building huge structures and hotels on Goan soil, thereby depriving Goans of their land.
The Indian government has now stopped long-term visas. The average tourists cannot spend more than 6 months in India without a 2 month gap. This has become a major setback for tourism or the locals who rely on the tourists for their income.
The Goa government has fulfilled its wish of completely alienating the british tourists.

Goan numbers down after murder and rapes

Jan: The Telegraph (UK). By Dean Nelson in Majorda, Goa. The number of British visitors to the Indian resort of Goa has fallen dramatically in the wake of a series of murders and rapes of foreign tourists. New figures have shown peak-season visitor numbers are down by almost one-third on last year… today Goa is regarded by many as a "gangster's paradise" plagued by drug gangs, corrupt policemen and sex offenders

Russian illegality in Morjim demolished
5 Jan: Times of India. Illegal constructions belonging to Russian company True Axis private limited within CRZ limits at Tembwada, Morjim, were finally razed by the authorities on Monday over a year after the demolition order was first issued by the Goa coastal zone management authority . The demolition squad also brought down three other illegal structures belonging to locals

Stupid Visas
Maurice Johnson, by email

This letter is from a very concerned husband and wife who are proud to have a lot of Goan/Indian friends.
There are a handful of Brits/Europeans who want to live in peace and harmony in Goa. The government, in its wisdom, has given us one more problem over visas, basically saying that we cannot enjoy our lives here and bring money from our own countries.
The question that arises is, do you think that it would then be fair to send 70,000-plus Goans and 1,000,000-plus Indians back home from the UK?

Wonder if Vicki would dare say this. It`s exactly the point she should make, but wont.

Michael Muschamp, Torquay
A double standard
INDIA'S External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna advocates drastic measures if attacks on Indians are not stopped. This is, at worst, mischievous, as hooligans in India do not need encouragement to burn properties of perceived enemies.

Mr Krishna's Government has done nothing of note to curb attacks on foreigners in India, particularly Goa. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown recently warned British tourists after yet another murder there.

Published figures show that in 2006, 111 Britons died of natural and unnatural causes in India. In Goa alone in 2007, 40 Britons died; in 2008, 50 died there. Often the blame is put on the so-called ''bad behaviour'' of foreigners in indulging in alcohol, drugs and late-night parties. Indian politicians should clean up their backyard first before educating others.

Sampath Kumar, Mornington

Action, not excuses
THE Indian Government should not resort to hyperbole and sabre-rattling in pandering to its constituents' demands. However, it is equally incumbent on thinking Australians to refrain from a knee-jerk presentation of India's horrendous crime or sectarian violence record as a justification or excuse to sit on our hands.

The progressive degeneration of law and order in Melbourne is an issue that the Victorian and Australian governments need to tackle. No amount of finger-pointing at India will resolve it. Instead, the momentum generated by the Indian media, student organisations and protests should be harnessed by local pressure groups to demand better policing of our streets

Re: In To-day's Newspapers

The murder of the young Indian boy must, obviously, be investigated thoroughly, and I have no doubt it will be.However, what of the Aussie murdered in Calungute, last year? Any ongoing investigation? Considering it was broad daylight, several witnesses, I`d have thought a speedy conclusion would have been forthcoming. There again, he`s a foreigner so why bother. The Indian authorities should clean up their act before interfering with others.

Davie.
