Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Hi J5 / Remy,
Point taken, but sometimes it can deviate so far off subject that important issues related to property purchase and media exposure can be totally missed. I think we all have a nasty habit of not linking the previous post or not quoting the relative post in question, so I consider myself hands slapped as well !:( K-C |

In Today's Newspapers
This article is copywright of the Herald. I've highlighted 'interesting' words & phrases. Irony, Ironic? Pi**sing about over visas? What goes around. . . . . .
Visa racket prompts State to seek probe The State government has sought a full-fledged probe into a visa racket run by travel agents based in Goa and Israel after a group of Goans, who went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, were stranded on the Egypt border after being denied visas to enter Israel. Commissioner for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) affairs Eduardo Faleiro, addressing a press conference today stated that he would ask Indian Ambassador to Israel Navtej Sarna to order a probe into the nexus between travel agents in Goa and Israel. “These travel agents have been flouting visa norms and cheating pilgrims,†Faleiro said. According to the rules, Faleiro said, applications for visas have to be submitted to an Israeli consul general based in Mumbai. “But in several cases, including this one, travel agents in India straightway contact their counterparts in Israel for visas,†he said adding “ This is illegal and calls for a high level probe.†Speaking about the agony the 14 pilgrims had to go during their journey as they were separated from their family for three days in Cairo, Faleiro said, the pilgrims were not even aware that they had been denied visas. “They realised their visas had been rejected when they reached the borders of Israel,†he said. While leaving from Goa the pilgrims were told that they have valid visas and just before reaching the borders they were told that their visa has been cancelled, Faleiro said. Blaming the Israel-based associate Gemms Travels, of the Goan travel agent, Faleiro said that Gemms Travels had knowledge on May 14 itself that the visas were denied but he did not inform anyone fearing all the 97 pilgrims may back out from the tour. “Only a timely action on my request by the Indian ambassador to Israel, the Israeli consul general and the Israel ambassador in New Delhi saw that the 14 were granted visas,†Faleiro said. Despite insistence from mediapersons to name the travel agent based in Goa, who too was a party in duping the pilgrims, Faleiro refused to do so saying “He has agreed to compensate the 14 people for the damages and expenditure.†Faleiro has further asked Sarna to insist on an official reply from the Israeli authorities as to why the 14 pilgrims were denied visas. “We have insisted that Israel’s Interior Ministry give us a reply as to why the pilgrims were denied visas. They only intended to visit the holy land for pilgrimage,†said Faleiro. Edmund Antao, co-ordinator of Crusaders for Jesus with Mary - a Christian faith building group that led a batch of 97 pilgrims to Israel’s holy destinations last month- told reporters here that Israeli officials denied visas to 14 members of the entourage on account of religious profiling. “The Israeli Interior Ministry clearly went by names. Even a name like Fatima was enough for them to deny the pilgrim a visa. They denied one of our fellow pilgrims a visa because he was named Albuquerque,†Antao said, adding that the Israeli authorities wrongly perceived the obviously Christian surname as ‘Al-buquerque’ that has Arabic overtones.
