In a country that is suffering from an uncontrollable and unsustainable population explosion, this seems like a pretty good idea to me! Maybe making it compulsory would help?

Dr Willy to migrate?
Inacio Verdes Fernandes, Candolim
A little bird from Saligao tells me that Dr Wilfred A D’Souza, a famed surgeon, shrewd politician and former Chief Minister of Goa, is all set to bid adieu to Goa and migrate to the UK.
Dr Willy, election agent of Purushottam Kakodkar during the Lok Sabha election in 1972, first entered the Goa Legislative Assembly as UG MLA from Benaulim constituency in the by-election. Since then, a lot of water has passed through the Mandovi and Zuari rivers.
At one time, Dr Willy was the darling of Goans, especially the minority community. But, as time passed, he changed completely. He started supporting the hotel lobby and, at their behest, harassing the temporary shack owners who earn their livelihood on the beach during the tourist season.
The hoteliers started bringing pressure on him to stop the beach shacks and minimise the number of shacks. In the year 1998, he started the lottery system. To this day, shack owners are suffering due to his politics.
Many Goans will be happy if he migrates to the UK. May God give him many more fruitful years there, and help him to give some good advice to his Goan counterpart in British Parliament, Keith Vaz.

Jane Bellingham, UK/Goa
Apropos of Mr Marcus D’Sa’s letter ‘Reduce visa duration’ (Herald, 1 Jul), he should note that currently there are over 50,000 Goans living and working in the UK alone. If Mr D Sa were to take a trip to Swindon, he would find that a great majority have bought homes there and in London. Goans living in Swindon have also asked for Government financial backing for their own community hall!
The few British ex pats who live here on a long term basis are pensioners who not only spend their pensions in local shops but do not take up any local jobs. We live peacefully and do not cause any drain on your economy. Most of us pay tax here, so all round Goa takes from us but gives nothing in return, except a peaceful and pleasant retirement, which is all we ask for.
Please remember that every time we have to leave to renew our visas, we spend the money in other countries which would normally be spent here.
Just give us a break and let us live in peace!

taken from Herald Letters. Good for you Jane exactly what we all think.

Re: In To-day's Newspapers

I have been unable to get on line for a few days but can't see anything about this

http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=23982&cid=26

EXTENSION REJECTED
The department has also declined to extend registration of another Children’s Home -- Children Walking Tall (CWT), that operated from Karaswada, Mapusa.
The department refused to extend the registration when found that it has not complied with the order of the chief secretary.
The NGO having main office out side India has to obtained clearance from Reserve Bank of India (RBI), for starting operations in India.
In this case, the department found that CWT did not have clearance from RBI. Also, most of the volunteers working with the NGO came to India on tourist visa.
Considering all facts, the department felt that CWT is not fit institution to be registered as Children Home under the GCA, and therefore, rejected its application.

Can you believe this crap - I do not know the man who runs this and I am very sorry I can't remember his name but know from this and other forums that he does brilliant work in Goa. How can these stupid people say things like this. (We have a sponsor child in Goa so our money goes there).
When I read this to my OH all he said was - what do you expect from them - all those Ba""""ds want hanging and that is from a very calm man.
They do such good work there - we hear tourist saying all the time they are going to take stuff up to Mango House - maybe it is because these kids are not Goans.

Just remembered his name poipleshadow.

Bill to protect Goan land introduced in Rajya Sabha
Written by NT Network

PANAJI: The Rajya Sabha member, Mr Shantaram Naik on Friday introduced a private members bill in the Rajya Sabha seeking to add Article 371 I to the Constitution of India, to authorise Goa Legislature to enact legislation to regulate ownership and transfer of land in the state of Goa in public interest and in the interest and on grounds of duration of residence in the state, social, economic and environment needs of the state and such other public interest, as may be specified by the state by law.
Mr Naik’s bill also provides to authorise Goa Legislature enact legislation to regulate influx of migrants considering available resources, specially, land, water, power etc, and sanitation and also environmental aspects.
The bill also provides to make Goa Legislature competent to enact legislation to opt for any of the two types of panchayats for villages, intermediate and district level.
Mr Naik, in his statement, annexed to the bill said that rights existing under the Constitution should not be so unfettered so as to change economic scenario of a smaller state, particularly its villages, much to the disadvantage of the state and its people. Anti-social elements which become a part of such uncontrolled transactions are proving disastrous for a state like Goa.
As regards the provision to control migrants, Mr Naik has said that the state of Goa consists of hardly 3,702 sq meters of land with a population of roughly 14 lakh, increasing number of migrant population has reached to an unmanageable proportions. While it is the fundamental right of every citizen under Article 19 of the Constitution to move freely throughout the territory of India, it is also the fundamental right of others to live a decent life with basic amenities provided by the state. In order to safeguard the basic rights of those Goans as also non-Goans who are settled in Goa for a number of years, further inflow has to be regulated to avoid a virtual stampede in near future, Mr Naik has added.
With regards to the provision dealing with Panchayati Raj system contained in the bill, Mr Naik has said, Article 243 of the Constitution provides for the constitution of village, intermediate and district level panchayats. There is no option even for the smaller states like Goa to opt for any of the two types, if a state
so desires.
States having population of not exceeding twenty lakhs have an option of not constituting intermediate level panchayats, which option state of Goa has exercised but, if a state due its smallness of size and population intends to opt for intermediate and village level panchayats, Article 243B does not permit the same.

Letter from to-day's Herald.
ll-informed views -
Marcus Johnson, UK/Goa
With respect to Mr Marcus D’Sa’s letter ‘Reduce visa duration’ (Herald, 1 Jul), I would like to tell this gentleman that he should get his facts correct before he starts making statements about foreigners being a drain on the Goan economy and how long he feels they should be allowed to stay in Goa.
Goans live in the UK, USA and countless other countries in Europe and around the world. The concerned governments have not stopped them making a home for themselves over the years by limiting their visas to a shorter period of time. In fact they have been made very welcome and are given all the allowances that are available in the UK. They get free medical treatment and also unemployment benefit if they are out of work.
Goan and Indian people are very nice. We have many friends here, some of whom are like family to us. Goa itself is a lovely place. But such ill-informed views will only vitiate the situation.

From the BBC website

Apparently it's budget day in India on Monday - have a look at this article:

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8130070.stm

Here's a short extract:

The finance ministry is keen for the government to stop subsidising fuel prices. It also wants to see the restrictions on foreign investment eased.

I expect this will only relate to large corporations investing many Crores of Rupees.

Re: In To-day's Newspapers

I think it will be a huge loss if Children walking Tall shuts down as its the only charity in Goa that is a charity. I dont know if anyone remembers 2 years ago the British Navy guys doing charity work in goa and they went to the Mango house that is where CWT is. They didnt go to el shaddai goa children's home which is the more famous home. They must have known what a lot of us already know about what is a charity in Goa and what is just a money making business for some corrupt people in Goa .

Re: In To-day's Newspapers

So I bet alot of you thought that apart from trying to shut down well run childrens homes and ignoring mountains of garbage and flooding in the capital city (Oooh my goodness, we suddenly seem to have a monsoon, Quelle Surprise!), our wonder-arse government was doing nothing?
Nope, more useful actions abound with;

http://www1.timesofindia.indiatimes....ow/4739385.cms

So now the famous and almost clean watering hole in Mapusa market will have to change its name after decades in existence and the patron saint of prunes will no longer be celebrated. All the scrubby little bars called "God's Gift" as they were supposedly the result of prayers will have to be honest as to their origins and rename as "From Shafting Tourists" or "Brother in the Gulf". Does this mean that the average bone-idle Goon will lose his rosy religious glow when sitting in a dirty little feni-den called St Anthony Bar?
Could we see a reaction here, and churches being renamed "The Red Lying" or "Kings Alms" and selling communion wine by the pint......... don't get excited Noni, it would be Goon and sweet, innit?
