Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Stumbled across this, oldish 'news', I know;
Richard Orange 10.02.09 • The last time I saw British deputy high commissioner Vicki Treadell speak, she voiced relief at how smoothly the move to the commission's new offices had gone. The Foreign Office hit the peak of the city's property bubble last April when it forked out about £20 million for floors in the Bandra-Kurla Complex — you'd pay about a third less today. But two months in, the bottom floor is still boarded up and staff take their tea in an unfurnished concrete hangar because the canteen still isn't finished. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standa...our/article.do © 2009 ES London Limited Value for money, without a doubt. |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Insulting foreigners Mary Lar, Calangute I felt insulted when I read the letter by Marcus D’Sa titled ‘Reduce Visa duration’ (Herald, 1 Jul), when he says that we foreigners who live here are a drain on the economy. We have bought homes or rented them. We pay for all health care in pounds sterling. We give work to some locals, who are now our friends. We try to help wherever possible. If visa duration is reduced further, we have to leave the country to go and renew visas, spending money in other countries which we would have spent in Goa. There are around 400 Britishers living in Goa compared with over 60,000 Goans living in the UK. They don’t have the worry that someone may take away their homes. They don’t have to pay for health care, and even get benefits when they have no work. Please let us just live in peace From the Herald to-day. |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Has anyone seen the latest on the Goan voice. I am so furious, upset etc.
So, it appears we don't care about Goans, is that the case? I think not. Apparantly Goans could be kicked out of the UK at any time, is that the case? it is not. We are all people without worth. It is written in an apparantly rational way. I think that someone should get the facts right. 1. That most UK nationals do care about the sons and daughters of the soil and it is true they do not care for the corrupt users of Goa. These users of Goa include members of the Govt. as well as foreigners who have criminal intent. 2. The sons and daughters of the soil have made it abundently clear to me that they have to pay bribes from cradle to grave. Yes, for birth certificates death certificates and for the right to cremation or burial. That is appalling and any Goan Nationalist who thinks what goes on here is really OK is not even decent. 3. It is absolutely groundless to infer that Goans in the UK would be thrown out. They won't and why should they be. 4. Identity is fluid and changes through time and interaction with others. There are of course issues with regard to population in Goa. However, these should be dealt with sensitively, and quite frankly without all this hate the FN stuff. It has been done before by people that really are not considered decent ie; Hitler OK enough good work with the petition, r |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Goanet Highlights by Cornel DaCosta from www.goanvoice.org.uk
Re the recent furore over the Brits purchasing property in Goa, to the best of our understanding, it appears that Goan consciousness and awareness was raised with the discovery that large tracts of Goa were purchased by some Russians and Israelis recently. Rumours spread quickly that some Goans were prevented from entering areas demarcated by these two groups and that they were up to all kinds of nefarious activities. In time, a local 'Save Goa' movement emerged to regulate the inflow into Goa of well to do Indians, to stop unauthorised large scale construction work sprouting all over the place and drawing in itinerant workers for these projects, to stop unapproved hill cutting and building works, and to control the intensification of mining that was causing havoc to the environment. The purchase of land and property by relatively small numbers of ex pat Brits and other Europeans also became an irritation within this conundrum. Ministers addressing these concerns seem to have taken the easy way out. Instead of taking on the Russians and Israelis, their soft target easily became the Brits and they raised questions over the rights of Brits to buy property and settle in Goa. Few would perhaps want to disrupt those who purchased property following proper legal and financial procedures and suggestions about retrospective legislation to confiscate some properties are deemed highly questionable by many. However, there are some suspicions that some purchases were acquired illegally through bribery or that some purchasers were duped by locals keen to make a quick buck through devious ways including selling property illegitimately and illegally. However, local Goanet responses are of interest on this issue and I summarise in my words, those that seem to stand out: a) If so many Goans had not left Goa over the years, we would not have been in this mess now. b) Unlike some western Goan diasporean countries, Goa does not have the infrastructure to absorb foreigners. c) We note so many tears for the foreigners but none for local Goans who now cannot purchase properties as the foreigners have effectively pushed up property prices. d) India is bursting at the seams. It cannot take in new people. e) Why do these Brits want to come here when so many from Goa are keen to leave? f) Low calibre Brits with few skills to offer want to come to Goa. g) While some 50,000 Goans may be settled in the UK, they may be expelled in time and may need to return to Goa. h) We in Goa and India are not ruled by foreigners but those Goans who have left for places like the UK are happy to be ruled by foreigners. i) The Goans in places like the UK undertake menial work that the locals will not do. j) Food prices in Goa and especially that of fish have gone up because of the foreigners. k) The British foreigners are not the problem but the "trash" coming into Goa from the rest of India. l) Brits come to Goa because they cannot afford to buy property in the UK. m) The Goans owning property in the UK are British nationals while the Brits in Goa are foreigners. With such polarisation of views the issue of whether British nationals of Goan origin may buy and own property in Goa has not surfaced but no doubt it will sooner or later. Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Can I remind you all that Cornel Da Costa has signed the petition:thumbup:
That he has also urged other to do so:thumbup: That he has expressed the views of some local Goans in Goa to pour scorn on those views.He has done so much for the British that have bought out in Goa he isn't against us,please read the article again,this article certainly leans towards the British that have bought. Also read the link to his article last week which says the very same:thumbup: I cannot re-iterate my point any clearer that the Voice or Cornel are NOT AGAINST USThe link to his earlier post http://britishexpats.com/forum/showp...0&postcount=88 Hope this clears this matter up GC |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Sorry if I was not clear with regard to the summary of views from goanet.
I am not criticising the author at all. I am expressing my frustration with the misinformation and stereotypical views of FNs that abound at the moment. It is very unjust and basically we have no rights to reply. The constant criticism of FNs from so many quarters is really unacceptable and I am sick of it. I hope that clears up any misunderstanding. r |
