I can't do this multiquote thing so I will do you one at a time.
Is not a university education the pinnacle of education in western society?
So yes, you can be self educated, but a university education has to be so much richer because profs should really know their subjects.

I've worked with physicists who were knee deep in PhDs who hadn't a clue about the arts. They could talk you through CERN, discuss why if there were aliens that they wouldn't be 10 feet tall, worry about the best way to make coffee but spot a Turner from across the room? Heck as like.

Why the necessity for a degree, though? I have no formal education in the fine arts - I'm a graduate engineer, for God's sake, you can't get much more Philistine an education than that. However, I can read and write, and through the wonders of the printing press (a piece of technolgy, by the way, invented by an artificer goldsmith, who today would probably be considered an engineer) I have access to books about high culture and the arts, through which I have been able to learn enough to appreciate fine art, literature, music, etc. Nor, incidentally, does that mean I magically lose the ability to appreciate sport, the "outdoor life," or any of the other "low culture" pursuits that you so derided in an earlier post.
You can read my comment to the fledermouse for clarification.
I think sport is a low life preoccupation, but I'll watch the world cup anyway!
Outdoor pursuits if they are in contemplation of nature are ok.

I think you have a good point and I applaud your concise and linear augment. I too think that people with, lets say, more formal schooling are more adept at understanding their surroundings, rationally and analytically. Plus, they tend to be better looking, drive nicer cars and often smell better.

The central problem of your life Oakville is that you are an engineer.Engineers usually have no time for the arts....I'm married to an engineer and it's a dive into the garage for him if I start talking poetry and such.

Some posts I ignore if I think they are not worth bothering with....sometimes I do miss them, but I will answer you.
Friends was it....err I said that I do neglect my friends this is because I spend lots of time arguing with the cerebrally challenged on the internet, working, running a home, dealing with family.
Seriously can you keep up with all the people that want to be your friend...I wish I could.

I don't understand the exchange with the Oakville at all should I have done?

Define what you mean by this? Do you mean the highest one education one can achieve in a subject? A Bachelor's degree is only the start of further education.

I'm losing the bloody plot here!

He can be somewhat oblique but what I can untangle from his comment is, being an engineer doesn’t necessarily preclude an understanding of the finer points of human culture. Although on further reading of his post, it does beg the question how in-depth and sophisticated can you be about certain subjects by simply reading the odd anthology in an rather ad hoc manner.

I am losing the plot and haven't had the time to go back and think about it.
I'm saying that to understand Homer you probably need a bit of help...where better than a university.

ok I've had enough of this claptrap and am tired of feeding the troll's overinflated 'university educated and therefore better than you are' ego.
Anyone who thinks that having a degree automatically makes you better than someone who doesn't is either arrogant, a fool, or both.
