... I'm sure if you read back through this topic for a few pages or so you'll find recommendations for firms with the best rates, and you can then do a bit of research and hopefully find the best current deals.

rates for instant transfer in real time are excellent with hsbc we get only point something of a cent less than rate

eg it its 1.895 for example we get 1.89 with no charges

Re: Exchange rate

If you have cash to switch a 3 cent rise is about 1.5% more Canadian dollars for the pound - worth noticing.

If I had money to swap I'd do it in segments - I'd swap 25% of my cash at the current rate just to even out the fluctuations - bare in mind it was as low as $1.75 - £1 a few weeks ago.

Spreading the risk by swapping in bits seems to make sense.

i had looked at the HSBC option (there are more of their branches near to my current location in London UK than TD or RBC etc :D) but they seemed to want me to have been their customer for at least 6 months first.....

and i also wondered if their rates of exchange were as competitive as say those offered by xe.com or money corp, who (for eg) are offering $1.85 today? i would guess not

Re: Exchange rate

in didnt have an account for 6 months and was able to open accounts in both uk and canada before coming to canda

with hsbc you get realtime rates and real time tranfers
so it the rate changes within seconds ( which it does)thats the rate you get

there are no fees and the rate is as good if not better than xe money corp etc

plus you are in total control as you choose the exact second you want to transfer with your online account

saddo that I am I have been known to watch rates for hours to pick the exact right moment:lol:

I agree...

If you are swapping large amounts of cash every little bit extra helps - on a total of say £100k, a 0.5% higher rate over HSBC could get you around $900 Canadian dollars more, well worth the hassle IMO

do check hsbc as when we bought our canadian home we shopped around for such a large amount to be sure and hsbc were still a better rate not only that being able to do everything from your onw pc at exactly the time you choose and perhap a little more security in the very scary uk financial climate thrown into the bargain:unsure:

over the 10 months we have been here and changing money almost daily we have saved a fortune over the exchange companies

Couple of times we have done global transfers with HSBC and actually got better rates than other places. We also found it easy to do.

Does anybody have a link to the currency HSBC part of the site where you actually see the rates changing by the second - just curious to see how much it fluctuates.

dont think there is one for public consumption:lol:

you get the rate when you go into global view on log in to your accounts and there you get the real time rate but as previously said the rate has been unbeatbale for last 10 months on a daily basis you will just have to take my word for it im afriad:confused:

if you just want to sse the rate chnges go onto yahoo money and kepp clicking refresh the rates change all day long

This isnt a live 'real time' rate...

I'm going to back Chumley up there. I used Custom House before, and they were giving much better rates than HSBC (all over the phone). HSBC were way more than a cent adrift of the BBC currency page figure, Custom House were only one or two decimals of a cent.

Then I got this Global View thingy going and did a test change online. The online rate was way better than you'd get over the phone. I was shocked. Plus there was no fee to get money shifted from HSBC to Barclays, like there was with CH (it was an HSBC fee, not CH, for the swift transfer).

Custom House may still give a better rate, but there won't be much in it. And the ease of doing it instantly online is worth any difference, and then some!
