But they also can't afford not to raise rates as inflation pushes up the cost of everything without equivalent pay rises. Britain imports massive amounts of stuff, so a declining pound can't help but increase the cost of living.

Haven't the Fed and BoE been buying up most of the US and UK government bonds in the last year or so, because no-one else wanted to? I'm sure I read recently that the Fed now has about 5x as much in US bonds as the Chinese.

I need to pull the trigger for a mortgage down payment within the next 5 days
