But if you go into marriage control of your own fate is no longer yours. Your fate is in the hands of another person.

Only in Australia if you enter into a de facto relationship. There is no common law marriage in the UK or US.

Oh and as for your rocket scientist comment, no I am not a rocket scientist I merely must have a different yard stick to measure success. I would deem Framac's parents marriage as a success. You seem to believe that death is weak and giving up on a relationship.

behave yourself, you don't lose all rights to your life when you get married! you have to learn to compromise and consider someone else and not just think of yourself!

Let's summarise:
Dean does not belive in marriage
Dean believes there is no such thing as a successful marriage
Dean believes all women are money grabbing, marry for the wrong reason, will run off with someone else and are out to bleed a man dry.
Quite a few posters on here are happily married
Quite a few posters on here believe in marriage as a form of mutual commitment
Quite a few posters on here wouldn't marry Dean if he was a millionaire, wrapped in gold and shit money on a daily basis
I reckon your wife left you for the milkman Dean. You need councelling to get over it mate
Looks like it's a wind up folks

But if we are talking other counties, then there are various other things to consider. I am sure there are countries where you would need a marriage to live together, or face jail time.

Assuming that could be true of some of them......
go on then, what's your definition of a successful relationship (and don't wimp out by saying you can't define something that doesn't exist) and/or what makes you able to form that judgement when you (none of us, actually) are in no position to judge what people's relationships are like - and I'm talking about those that stay together. Presumably the ones who don't it's fair to say it wasn't successful!

To me the words successful and marriage are an oxymoron.

And there are countries/cultures where polygamy is practised as well.

Can we keep personal comments and any possible abuse out of the thread please. It's not necessary and I don't want to have to close it.

If you believe in fate then surely you are never in control of your own fate? Fate is predetermined destiny.

Hmm... I can see how you can control your own future in marriage.
