Thank you. I shall hopefully be enjoying it myself before too long.

When I absent-mindedly viewed that photograph for a few seconds I assumed they were coconuts in the trees and the dust had blown over from a mine.

Shiiiiit! I must be acclimatised

I've not forgotten after spending last winter in it! Never want to see snow again as long as I live

My brother-in-law is a Tradie (aren't all Aussies?!) and he says that he is convinced (based on his experiences as a Tradie in Australia including knowing a lot of British workers on jobs here - plus a few trips to the UK of his own) that British houses are built much better (particularly in terms of proper, effective insulation) than Aussie houses.

It does often seem, once you start looking, that a lot of places in Australia are extremely, er, crap in their construction. No wonder so many people end up homeless in situations of flood and fire - the houses are simply not built to withstand ANYTHING much at all - ironic considering the climate here.

Again I find myself agreeing with you. I am a cabinet maker and have seen lots of houses here. Houses seem to be built down to a price and are very basic at best. Why not effectively insulate and add double glazing as standard from new ? It isn't as if it doesn't get cold or of course very hot so these things would reduce power bills quite dramatically.

I am a chippie and can tell you houses in the UK are built not twice but at least 3 times better than in Oz, you cannot put a nail in the wall in a Aussies house as the hammer will go through the wall.

This was the view from our front porch 4 days before we left the UK for the 35C heat of a Brisbane summer. I don't miss it either

There seem to be a lot of houses around in FNQ at least, that are just made of breeze blocks without being plastered! That's the pits in terms of aesthetics but I guess you can hang a picture up without having to acro-jack the wall first.
