I tried that too. But all I got was vacant "does not compute" looks resulting in wasted time for everyone or a blank stare with no acknowledgement at all as they take advantage of the kind gesture I'd given them. Now I've opted for the "when in Rome..." approach just because it's easier. But will continue to properly acknowledge others when it's due.

I have noticed over here that the "does not compute" look is often followed by them pressing their hooter. That was quite an amusing observation actually.

I do not thing I have never ever "not" got a wave or a thumbs up if I have let someone out in the UK.

I usually get an acknowledgement if I've let someone out, but if I pull over to let on-coming traffic pass, especially in a built up suburb where cars are parked either side, I often get no acknowledgement at all It often tends to be elderly men too, who can only look forward, no deviation and definitely no looking in their rear view mirror , or elderly women who are sat so far forward their noses are touching the steering wheel
