My Dad came out of hospital last night, just spoken to him - he sounds so confused

He is having to have carers in for personal care and my sister is living with him for the moment.

I hope the confusion is the medicine, he kept saying 'everything is all muddly'.

Glad he is out of hospital. He has been pretty shaken up, and while it might be the meds, it might be a while before things settle down.
My friend's dad had a fall and was in hospital for a few months- he is still having carers in 6 months after the fall, as it has left him quite damaged. his mobility is improving, but everything is a very slow process. Be patient, and fingers crossed that the "muddliness" goes away. Older people only need a tiny thing to be out of balance for them to be muddled.

Seems like others have mostly had good news or reasonable days today.

Spicy scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese to start the day on the front foot, gathered some wood for tonight, laundry happening, recovering some documents from a neighbour's dead PC and some general tidying planned.

I can feel a decent dump on the horizon so the day is only going to get better.

off topic for a minute Vim but my husband has a portable hard drive that has suddenly stopped working. It has his entire working life on there. Any advice as to whether we can recover the contents?

I had the same thing happen to me with my backup drive a couple of months back.

If it is a USB drive then have you tried plugging something else into the port to rule that out? And using a seperate cable, if possible, it could just be a broken cable. Does wiggling the cable intermittently get the computer to briefly 'see' the drive?

If it isn't the port or cable then hopefully it is the power supply to the drive (if it has one) or the controller board that is dead and not the drive itself.

Power --> Controller --> Drive

You will need to open up the case and seperate the drive from the controller, should be pretty simple and there will only be one or two connectors. Looks scary to the non-IT-geek but is pretty foolproof.

Then you will need to determine what kind of drive it is based on the connector type, take a piccy and post it here if you like.

You could then:
1) Plug it into a desktop PC that supports such a drive (if you have one) and see if it works.

or

2) Buy a caddy (enclosure) to house it and then use it as you did before.

Option 1 is preferable as it means no cash outlay.

Option 2 means that, of course, if the drive is dead then it still won't work. But you should be able to pick a caddy up for $30 or so ... worth a punt for the life's work I'd say.

If the drive is dead then there are professional options out there but it's not cheap or guaranteed. Hence the reasons we back-up regularly

I'd put money on the drive being OK btw ... about $30 worth.

My day has been good, had to telephone my specialist at 7.30am this morning on his instruction to see if he wanted me to come into hospital for some iv antibiotics, as the issue hasnt got any worse, he just wants another update tomorrow.

Had my hair done - cut much shorter and dyed darker as the drugs I am on are bleaching it and making grow like a woolly mammoth, so it is much shorter now - taking a bit of getting used to but I think I like it.

Just done a bit of housework, now having a cuppa watching my bloody parrot throw seed everywhere (she is so cute though)

And I can hear the red tailed black cockies outside in the trees, I love that sound.

Hope everyone else is having a good day/weekend so far.

Went out and got a few bits from Howards (ours is closing so everything 50% off). Fixed my steam mop. Made pastry from scratch (shortcrust) and now have a chicken and veg pie in the oven made from yesterday's leftover mustard chicken.

Oh, and cleared all the crap out of my car ready for it to go to the garage on Tuesday. Unbelievably there was actually a floor in there! Haven't gone as far as actually vacuuming it though. Don't want to give the car ideas of grandeur!

Thanks Vim, not a power issue as it's recognising something is being plugged in but says it's damaged. Might have to fork out some cash because it's bad if we can't get the contents back!!

Back to my day, started out lovely. Beautiful crisp winters day in Perth. Netball this morning and daughter rolls ankle. 4 hours later and she has a lot of pain so ED we go. 4 hours after that and we leave on crutches with a cast!

Will be in plaster for her final disco at her current school and for her 10th birthday, as you can imagine she is not happy camper! On the plus side, all still good with daughter number 1 so I guess you can't have it all!!

Having just been through the rolled ankle/cast thing with DD, you have my sympathies NB- kind of puts a cramp on the disco style, but you could always colour the cast!
Bernie, I doubt I could do the job you do- I'd be in tears all the time. That poor family.
cheetah7- so glad your day was a good one- know what you mean about the hair:mine is frizzy and keeps going ginger. Time to dye it I suppose, as the grey is showing again.
Iwannabethere- your pie sonds lovely. Roast leg of lamb for me today, then tomorrow a casserole. I have a crate of turnips- what on earth can I do with those apart from mash them or put them in casserole/soup??
