Re: Aus police
I got done for speeding a while back on a double de-merit weekend. They took $81, and half my driving license, and at the end had me smiling and saying thank you for it. Whichever way you slice it, they do know how to deal with people. I reckon they'll only employ the old arrogant bullying thing if they feel it's warranted

Like other posters here have said, you form your views based on your own personal experiences of the police. I've found them to be friendly and courteous thus far - having never been breathalysed in the UK in 15 years or so of driving, I came here and have now been pulled over about 6 times now - random testing. I never have anything to worry about as I don't drink and maybe my carefree attitude wins them over - but as I said, they've been positively charming to me! That's not to say that I would extrapolate that statistic to all Police are good, kind and charming - just my experience since I've been here.
One thing that I do think is strange though, is that bar one, each of the units set up to do the roadside tests when I have been pulled over have been at afternoon school run time - quite unnerving that they must get a good haul of afternoon drinkers.

Re: Aus police
As previously posted it's down to personal experience. Sounds like you're entitled to be bitter, but I'm not going to be based on the experience of someone I don't know

No but you are the one who said they only employ the bullying tactics when warranted.

No, I said I reckon the must, because they'd never employed them with me. I'm sorry about your experience with em but there's no need to jump down my throat cos I don't share your experience

Re: Aus police
My only experience is with Vic Police. So very, very rude.
Long story but basically in my experience, instead of calming down a situation, they go on the defensive straight away, upping the ante. They have no idea how to deal with drunk people, with whom you should never try and argue with nor lose your temper. Waste of time.
Had two female police officers stop me and my hubby and his mate one night, as we walked back from the pub. They were driving around after hearing reports of an attack on a female in the area. They saw me with two men and were obviously keen to stop and quesiton us. Fair enough. However, I was shocked at how aggressive they were with my husband's friend, who was drunk and did not take kindly to it. One of the girls just got more and more angry with him, turning what should have been a routine conversation into "mate, you want to come back to the station with us" aggressive.
Eventually she asked both my husband and friend to step away from their police car so they could question me on my own. Fair enough. She continued to question me in an aggressive manner about my mate, why was he such an asshole? Why was he giving her lip??? Eventually, after being very reasonable with her I found myself getting on the defensive too! I told her that I felt she had handled it all wrong, that yes he was drunk but that wasn't illegal and she had gone out of her way to piss him off and got the result she was looking for. I reasoned that he was drunk and that she didn't really seem to know how to deal with that. At that point I lost my courage and shut up. She took it well actually, which was strange, but maybe she was a man hater, dunno. But it was only then she decided to ask me if I was ok, was I happy to be with these two guys, was I afraid to talk in front of them etc, basically trying to find out if I was the victim they had had a report on. Why didn't she quesiton me like that from the start instead of launching into a tirade about my "asshole mate"???
Also, I have a friend in Melbourne who socialises with a police man and his wife. Believe it or not, and I find this shocking, this same police man has done time in WA for attempted Manslaughter....apparently a youthful mistake, all in the past...
And why must they be such wankers during a routine breathaliser???

Re: Aus police
Strangely the only positive police interaction I've had in WA was with a female. She pissed me off by walking into my house univited, I told her to get out unless she had a warrant, she apologised and asked if she could come in. I said no, she laughed and said fair enough and talked to me through closed screen door.

Your statistics are incorrect. I am a driver and I dont find Traffic cops unhelpful and arrogant, and I certainly dont despise them. I wish there were more of them out there giving tickets to the arsehole drivers who want to tailgate me whilst doing 100kph on country roads.

Re: Aus police
After I got stopped for the sixth, yes sixth, Tuesday morning running in the same street, at the same time of day, for a RBT I wound down the window and lightheartedly said to the cop, "come on mate, how is this random, same day, same time, week after week".
