Ah, I see I have a fellow worrier
Removals - we are going to put stickers with a big red cross on everything we do not want packed!
The removal company have said we have to remain in the house anyway, so I shall be watching them carefully. I think I will put the suitcases etc in the attic, just to make sure they do not get accidentally packed. In the kitchen I'll try and put everything we are keeping at the house, like spare crockery etc in one cupboard (with a very big red cross on the door!).
We have quite a few pieces of furniture that are not coming, so I will have to make extra sure they do not get packed. I have also read on here that they pack everything they see, I thikn it was Ian and Helena that found a pile of old newspapers had been packed carefully
As far as the addresses in Tas are concerned, we have just stipulated a 30 mile radius around Hobart and I guess I will contact the UK office once we are in Tas and give them our details and then take it from there. Nothing is straightforward is it?
If we don't get much time between exchange and completion, I have just realised the packers may have to come in the Whitsun week, that will be fun with the children off as well

Big stickers with a red cross! i'll have to remember that one!

I think i remember reading about the pile of old newspapers as well!

Was you getting a 20ft container? if so, do you think all your stuff will definitely fit in - i remember the Bishops had to leave some stuff behind with her brother...
Andy is adamant we dont have enough stuff to fill a 20ft container to it's maximum capacity - but everytime i look at stuff i have my doubts!

Dont envy that when the kids are at home....you know what they're like for leaving stuff lying about - might end up having something they wanted to take with them packed! Perhaps you'll have to banish them to a friends house or out in the garden all day!Boy it will be weird not seeing your stuff for 12weeks or so.... I've read on many posts on BE that it's like Christmas when it all arrives and you unpack everything! Must certainly help people settle seeing familiar things around them.. i know it would me..

We have been quoted for a 20ft container and they are not that big really if you stand inside one! (Building site near us has lots of them, so I was cheeky and asked if I could have a look inside!)
I think we have actually got rid of some more stuff since they did the quote so hopefully we will be OK.
I agree that when the container finally arrives and you have all of your own stuff again, it will be very exciting, as well as more comfortable, sitting on a sofa instead of the floor etc. We are not taking any beds or mattresses so will be buying new once we have a rental so at least thats one good thing

I cleared out some more clothes on Monday - although once bagged up - i sat there wondering whether i should get one top back out of the bag - how bad is that! in the end i just chucked the bag out in the garden and it's since been removed by Andy so i wont be getting it out now!
Jared's toys will need a sort out in a few months as he's outgrown a few of them so at least that's some more stuff we can possibly car-boot. Might get Andy to start having these car-boot sales soon....our loft is starting to fill up!
I wonder if it makes people a bit less materialistic when you make do with stuff for a few months...although it must be bliss when all the luxury non-essential stuff arrives!
You'll be arriving in winter as well wont you - so i guess your clothes will be bulkier in your cases... God knows when we'll be arriving - could be spring, summer, autumn - who knows!

Hi guys
I haven't been on for a while, been busy. Its true about the packers packing everything! I put up masking tape with DO NOT PACK written in red bold lettering on the cupboards that I didn't want packing. But the sneaky devils still managed to pack my sons money box full of english coins (about £45 worth) and my friends wedding card and gift voucher! Honestly if its not nailed down they will pack it!!!
Cathy all you would need to do is put all the kitchen stuff on the worktops that you want packing and keep the stuff you want to leave behind in a cupboard clearly marked DO NOT PACK.
It doesn't really matter if you end up slightly out of Hobart, it should still cost the same, we did the same thing and contacted the Aus office when we had an address. I guess they just need to know who they will be using this end logistically. We banished Alex to my parents house the day the packers came here. He had quite a shock when we brought him back home.
It isn't easy carrying all that luggage around, we struggled quite a bit! You are best off traveling light. For us it was different though as we had a week in Yorkshire and a week in LA and 10 days in Mel before hitting Tas, so we had to pack jumpers and coats as well as summer clothes for LA. Saying that though you will need your woollies as you will be coming out during winter. But you can wear your coats, so that will save on the weight of the cases.
I'm really excited for you, I've got all those feelings I had when we were at your stage- but without the worrying part!!
You'd be surprised how everything just falls into place.
I'm still keeping everything crossed for you Sam!!

Thanks Kerry
It is very exciting but very scary at the same time and I'm swinging between wanting to call it all off and cannot wait to be there feelings!
Just waiting to hear about our buyer's mortgage offer then hopefully we can set a date for the exchange - then I will book flights, car hire, accomodation, etc etc!
Have just seen some self catering apps in Hobart, called Bay View Villas, has an indoor heated swimming pool which I though would be great for the kids, have you heard of it?

Oh dear, I had the OMG what have we done feelings when we were at Heathrow waiting for our plane to come in. Its only natural to be hesitant and dare I say shit yourself feelings
Its all part of the emigrating experience!

Yes they do ring a bell, I'm sure I've seen a sign for them. Do you know what street they are on?

Its on Poets Road, West Hobart, appartments look OK but it was having the pool that really appealed to me as it will give the children something to do, especially as arriving in June it will get dark fairly early, so they might get a bit bored in the evening.
Yes, I am pooping myself a bit at the moment, can't quite believe we are leaving behind secure well paid jobs, a nice (ish) house, the dog, the horse (gulp) and everything familiar to us to turn up in a country where we have nothing -

Right enough of that, I'm off to the tip with son's wardrobe and various other bits from the garage which I can get rid of whilst hubby's not here, otherwise he keeps saying "But we might need that"

we were quite upset about it and if that was in front of the customers well? my partner has lived in farming country all his life and said he had never seen animals treat that way.
travelbug I am sure you are aware of the $7k first home owners grant but if the property you are buying is under $350 then you can claim up to $4k in duty concessions too
we didnt know this existed it was a nice surprise!

Hi Peter, thanks for your very long reply...
You must be getting as bad as me! I wont ask how long it took you to type!
Thats good that you have the no-alcohol rule etc on your buses too.
Yes, i'd read about the weather on tas a few times on different sites etc - and it is interesting how it can vary so much from one part of the Island to another. I do like changeable weather though... Dont think i could bear the thought of hot days for weeks or months on end...
Please dont stop sending any photo's - i enjoy seeing them as much as anyone else probably, and anyway it's nice to see things that make up a part of someone you're chatting to's life...
We are going to let Eden have pets - they just wont be as big as sheep!
We would love a couple of dogs when we eventually settle somewhere and some little pets that her and Jared can look after themselves as i think that's an important life lesson for kids to be responsible for feeding/cleaning out
and caring for some animals. We had loads of pets when i was a child - so its strange really that we've never had any ourselves....although we have always gone on holiday a lot - so it saved any worry of having people look after pets for us.
We dont want a large property (well Andy might disagree - so perhaps i should re-phrase that to "i" dont want a large property!
). We'd be happy with a 3bedroomed (4 would be lovely) place - but just extra living space - ie, a bigger kitchen, living room, dining room than what we have now would be great....dont want too many extra rooms - after all they all need cleaning!
Andy loves gardening and is keen to grow veggies etc - and i like arts&crafts so if i'm not going to be working initially i'd love something like a studio (or a glorified spare shed!) where i could get back into it.
We would both love to live as near to the sea as possible as well - and properties tend to be smaller plot wise than inland properties anyway then...
Your accident sounds awful.
Maybe i shouldn't ask what you were doing to sustain such an injury? I imagine it was terribly painful - are you still in pain because of it? I really hope not...
Maybe we should rename you the bionic oldgit!
So how long have you lived in Tassie for ? did you come over on a retirement visa? i've read before that people often need private medical cover etc as a condition to the visa...
What are people's general opinion of medicare in tas anyway? does it really suffice - or is it better in people's opinion to have additional cover anyway?
Over here anything i've ever had done has been on the NHS - but i have had BUPA cover for myself for years - and since having the kids for Andy and them as well. It's subsidised by my company - although i have recently thought about stopping the cover to save a bit of money before the move....but am now paranoid that if i do we might need it! I wanted it really incase anything ever happened and there was a long waiting time on the NHS to get something sorted...
Anyway, i think i've just beaten the length of your message - so i cant say anything now! Bye for now...
chat soon. take care
Cathy

Very funny!Me and my OH aren't actually married (not sure if we will or not - the jury's still out on that one for the timebeing - would rather spend the money on a great holiday!)....but if i ever do i'd already said i'd like to write my own wedding vows... you might have given me an idea there!

We have spoke about should we shouldn't we before we emigrate - just so that all our close friends and family could be there....but then we forget about the idea when we add up how many people would actually be at a party / reception.....
My daughter would like us to get married - but only so that she gets a new pair of shoes (with clip cloppy sound making heels) - and a pretty dress!
Hope you had a good shopping trip today!

You said " you might have given me an idea there "
So long as you remember Andy can get in first with a "Pre Nupt" Down on one knee asking for your hand forevermore but sign here first

Just remember he's entitled to ask for your worth in camels as a dowry .And of course you walk behind the camels
Maybe have a long engagement (40 years) and a party now that way Eden gets to wear her new shoes with high heels and pretty dress. You could always break off the engagement and get back to how it always is
My shopping trip was so fullfilling ......thankyou for asking

Like the "your worth in camels" bit.... I know what my Dads answer to that would be if Andy talked about dowry's!

We are actually engaged - have been for just over 6 years - Andy did do the romantic bit - we got engaged on a holiday to Kenya just before we moved into this house together... Andy's a traditional soul - he said he wanted it made clear his intentions for our future together were honourable!

The only thing in the back of my mind sometimes is that obviously i have a different surname to the children who have Andys...Not sure it really matters in this day and age as it's commonplace....but perhaps would be nice if we all shared the same name...

Anyway, i'll say bye for now... Got to get into work early today - i have an important meeting with a client from London at 4pm.....
talk to you soon!
take care

Bye for now...
chat soon. take care

Got to get into work early today - i have an important meeting with a client from London at 4pm.....
talk to you soon!
take care
Cathy

Andy sounds a reet good un.... steal his welding kit and bray him to to the kitchen sink so he can't escape

Hope "bray" is the right expression my Yorkshire mate used to weld my old car chassis and he brayed it. Not sure what Andy would say.
Hope the client takes the bait

Cheers Peter 11.30 pm and off to bed
