How do you know they were white the police did not reveal their race. The suburbs where it happened was very multicultural with many ethnic gangs. The police said it was a robeery and not racially motivated. l don't think theres ever been a murder of an Indain where racism was proven as the motive. ALmost all the murders of Indians in Australia have been carried out by other Indians.

in Sydney Indians held this protest against racism, but they said it was the Lebanese that were attacking them and had no problems with racism fom white australians. White Aussies are probably the least racist people in OZ often its Aboriginal and Lebanese that attack other people including whites becasue of their race. As someone said try getting a job in a chinese restruant as a cook or waiter if you are white and you see lots of adds for accomodation in the papers saying " Asians only" or prefer Asian"

As a general rule I would say the level of casual racism you hear people speaking over here is much higher than in the UK, although there is an argument that says people in the UK think similar things, but just don't express it out loud. Very possibly the case - impossible to determine for sure.
As with most countries I would say that racism and intolerance in general are more acute in rural areas. Living in the city (Sydney and Melbourne in particular) from my experience there is more integration. Although like I say I do hear quite a lot of shocking off the cuff comments that make me do a double take.
There are a few pockets of closed minded communities (of all races) that stick to their own, get aggressive towards all outsiders and are best avoided.
But the younger generation in general do seem a lot more inclusive and culturally accepting. I think you'd have to be very unlucky or stupid to experience any serious racial violence. I'd say the risks of that are no greater than in the UK and I certainly wouldn't let it put you off coming here.

Still not acceptable behaviour in society and you certainly won't see the average Australian in the street telling people to '***** off we're full', it is more the bogan element of society involved in that.
As others have mentioned, some Australians carry such a massive chip on their shoulder (insecurity) that they even discriminate towards people from other states and make hostile and derogatory comments towards them. These people would be part of that same bogan element that are involved in overt casual racism in Australian society.
I admit, a lot of people in Australia think these things and may express them in private among friends and family out of frustration mainly or even fear of the local culture becoming watered down, as one of the recent posters described is common in the UK as well, but very rarely will someone (the average Australian person) actually discriminate or act in a hostile manner towards any individual or group of people of ethnic origin purely because of their ethnicity.
That would make Australians a***holes to put it bluntly and no one would want to live here or be able to tolerate it for more than one second. Clearly this is not the case.

Australia is a first world country, one of the most developed nations in the world, and for the most part has a similar culture to the US and UK. A few people need to get over the novelty value of Australia and realise that we are just normal people living on the face of the earth like everyone else, we are not a bunch of redneck weirdos.
I totally agree with you.
Its a shame that Australia is perceived to be a racist country. To be honest with you many people I have spoken to here in London from all backgrounds say to me you will have major problems in socieity and getting a job in OZ because your Indian. They say to me dont go - but not one of them has ever been to OZ!!

Even many Russians perceive Australia as a racist country and believe me Russians dont know a thing about Australia:-) I remember an agent in my hometown in Russia in the late 90-s recommended going to study English to Canada rather than to Australia because Australia was a very racist country and I would be uncomfortable there:-) I do remember riots in Cronulla on TV rather vividly:-)

Those riots in Crounlla were the results of a turf war..... I dont expect you to believe that, but its a fact.
You really need to read this. If it were a race riot, people other than gang members would have been targetted.

The cronulla riots were shown overseas as racist Aussies attacking innocent people of anoter race, what they did'nt say that it was a group of people who were sick of everytime they went to the beach being bashed and their wives and girlfriends harrassed by gangs of lebanese and being called sl..ts and whores becasue they were'nt all covered up in muslim garb and they had had enough. l dont think most of the were racists l think they were pushed too far and they snapped

You also forget to mention that the Lebs went around stabbing and attempting to rape people afterwards.
For years the Lebs have run rampant without serious Police action, so the locals snapped and went psycho. This is what happens to a community when they are ignored. It is the first signs of societal collapse leading to revolution and civil war.
