But of course I read the news and the news regarding racism in Australia is quite frankly a little worrying for me. But on the other hand I feel the media may be blowing this way out of proportion? - Of course many student were assaulted and even killed.

The UK has its own problems for which I personally think is not that bad but because of the media coverage, Australia seems to have a serious issue.

I just wanted your thoughts with regarding this please.
You should worry not about racism, but about the cash you put up for your accounting course. Some accounting courses here are awful, and it is clear that the universities are putting them on simply to milk foreign students. Do any local students attend your course - probably not. Don't be surprised if your class - apart from you - is 100% Chinese. You may find them more racist than any local. Anyway, good luck.

well I dont know about UNSW? How reputable is it as an accounting course with domestic people? And what about Uni of Sydney?

Well I was on this website and I was thinking about Charles Sturt University as well. They are a lot cheaper than UNSW and I guess have a good accounting course as it shows here... What do you think? what is the reputation of CSU?

Also I don't mind the odd comment because I can give it better then I get from people, but I just don't want to get beaten up by gangs!

I plan to stay in Sydney.
l read about gangs of Lebanese targeting Indians in Sydney. But l guess if you live in a nice suburb you will be OK,.

Australia is a first world country, one of the most developed nations in the world, and for the most part has a similar culture to the US and UK. A few people need to get over the novelty value of Australia and realise that we are just normal people living on the face of the earth like everyone else, we are not a bunch of redneck weirdos.

The truth is that racism exists in many different forms, you need to remember that whilst Australia has quite a reprehensible past (as do many countries) it is a great country.

If you come to Australia with the mindset that its a racist country what is the point of coming?

Every culture has some form of prejudice, i mean the Hindus have a cast system do they not?

As very proud Black-British bloke the only racism I have witnessed has been an Australian born Serbian making monkey noises at Bruce Djite a black footballer in 2006.

Other than that its all about the attitude that your bring yourself, besides its a heck of a long way to travel...

Earlier this year I went to an Indian festival here in Melbourne so I could get a decent curry and listen to some Bhangra, and all these Indians started throwing paint at me and the family. They were laughing as they did it as well.

l agree people in the USA and europe believe anything they hear about Australia, if someone wrote an Article in an American newpaper or said on American TV non-white people have to sit at the back of the bus in OZ and theres seperate beaches for non whites most Americans would probably believe it.

Australias past is'nt anymore racist then the USA which murdered their native people, black people as slaves and segregation in the south up to the 1960's and a racist immigration policy against Chinese, but OZ seems to get attacked alot more for racist stuff in the past then the USA does.

I've heard the "Mexicans "comment many times, also heard the word "cockroaches" used in a similar way - which was explained to me as being used to describe them cos they crawl over the border from NSW.

I have never heard anybody from QLD described as anything other than "rednecks".

In the same way that Queenslanders are called Cane Toads in NSW. It's a name, nothing more. Victorians are Mexicans because they come from south of the border but I've never understood why it's Victorians and not NSW people. No different from English called Scots Jocks etc.

Going back to a previous comment, if I went to Aus Post etc and the person serving me didn't understand me because they hadn't taken the time to learn the national language I'd be pissed off as well and complain. Nothing to do with the nationality, more to do with the ignorance of someone who doesn't feel the need to learn the national language sufficiently. If I opened a shop in France and expected customers I'd make myself learn French fluently. Not rocket science.
