In the same way that Queenslanders are called Cane Toads in NSW. It's a name, nothing more. Victorians are Mexicans because they come from south of the border but I've never understood why it's Victorians and not NSW people. No different from English called Scots Jocks etc.
Going back to a previous comment, if I went to Aus Post etc and the person serving me didn't understand me because they hadn't taken the time to learn the national language I'd be pissed off as well and complain. Nothing to do with the nationality, more to do with the ignorance of someone who doesn't feel the need to learn the national language sufficiently. If I opened a shop in France and expected customers I'd make myself learn French fluently. Not rocket science.

I know I have recently worked with Aussie guy who just moved up from NSW (and yes I've heard him called both a cockroach AND a Mexican - he was born in Vic) and he feels he has definitely been getting a raw deal career-wise purely because he is not a Queenslander - he's been hearing its not a case of "no experience" in Aus its a case of "no Qld experience - you're not one of us". He is a really switched-on guy with some very useful skills, but he is meeting brick walls just because of the NSW/Qld thing.

Heres a fairly good example of how Aus works

I totally agree with you.
Its a shame that Australia is perceived to be a racist country. To be honest with you many people I have spoken to here in London from all backgrounds say to me you will have major problems in socieity and getting a job in OZ because your Indian. They say to me dont go - but not one of them has ever been to OZ!!
Now why are they thinking this? I agree with you its the media - its very powerful they can spin everything. Apart from Murdochs empire many newspapers have got articles saying OZ is dangerous for overseas students! Now this may be partly because it is and partly because they want to keep readers but as an outsider how does one know the proportions?
But the fact is where else am I meant to get information from? I don't know anyone in OZ. That's why I wanted to educate myself by writing this thread to see what its really like from people there. But if I wasn't going to Oz and just read my daily paper like everyone else I would be like
and that is what a lot of people here are like.
It is a shame. All members of society gets assaulted domestically and internationally but unfortunately this OZ story is big news globally when in fact happens all around the world. Its a fact of life but this is seem to be unusual when it shouldn't..

I am a British born Indian living in the UK who is thinking about doing (have gained admission) on a postgraduate course in accounting in Australia and then I hope to get a job out there doing CPA/CA.
But I never actually been to Australia - but I want to do this for many different reasons for which I wont go into.
But of course I read the news and the news regarding racism in Australia is quite frankly a little worrying for me. But on the other hand I feel the media may be blowing this way out of proportion? - Of course many student were assaulted and even killed.
The UK has its own problems for which I personally think is not that bad but because of the media coverage, Australia seems to have a serious issue.
I just wanted your thoughts with regarding this please.

Hi
I'm a British born Indian too, been living in Melbourne now for a little over 2 years. If you apply the same precautions as you would in the UK i.e. not walking through a park at 2am, avoiding bad areas, not staring at people and
apply the same common sense as you would in the UK - you should be fine.
Media coverage of the recent Indian racism saga was something to behold- i knew poor journalism existed but didn't realize how many poor journalist there were - Be it Oz media who i felt were in denial until indian media started reporting the attacks on indians, then the reckless and downright dangerous Indian media for turning anything that involved an indian - into a racism issue without doing any proper investigation - and embarrassingly for them they were bought down to earth when some attacks turned out to be car insurance fraud and attacks on indians by indians.
Being in Australia i've become much more aware of how UK media influence so much negativity on peoples opinion of how the UK is like i.e. everyones either getting stabbed or shot, sometimes beaten then shot, occasionally stabbed and shot.
On a side note - i went to watch Aamir Khans new film 'Peepli(Live)' - its directed by a former indian journalist - and gives a great take on how Indian
Media report issues - its satirical but does have some home truths.
Ok i've rambled on enough - hope everything works out for u

The last time I checked being a 'good bloke' was not exclusive to Australia. It would apply anywhere. I am not suggesting that this person should be an Aussie bloke - just assimilate - to use a term i don't really like or use. Besides, he brought up the pub reference.

I dont know if I would quite call it racism but in some places there is an undercurrent of dislike against anything not australian. Regardless of if your white or black you have to expect certain people to be against you if you are english or if you have any accent I think.
The majority of people are really nice but its just the odd one or two that can be a problem. I was really taken aback the first time I met someone who really had a hatred against english people, it was a bit of a shock

In Coles yesterday I witnessed an old Italian Australian fella having a real go at a Chinese Australian woman for not saying 'excuse me' for something. Australia is a big melting pot. Don't think people will pick on you just because you're Indian.

The Indian man who was murdered was mudered by 7 or 8 white youths and it was clearly racism.
The issues that make this are simply that many Indians are living in Poorer areas and are easy targets as they always take public transport late and mayeb carry laptops around.
Also the Melbourne Indian population revolves mainly around Punjabs. The Punjab Indians would have problem assimilating in India let Australia. Been a few good articles on how this punjab migration has affected the already established indian community in Melbourne.
If your a professional person who lives in a decent area and take precautions you'll be fine. If you go for the cheapest place possible and take public transport at night then you will run into problems just like anyone else who does this.

haha not quite, for example I took this short course in adelaide for a few months and everyone there was great except for this one guy. He was constantly having nasty digs at the english.
At first I ignored it for awhile but he gradually got worse as time went on until eventually the rest of the class who were aussies sided with me and we all started having a go back at him whenever he started to spout anti english nonsense. He quickly learned to keep quiet
There was lots of other nasty incidents but that was the first time I ever had to deal with someone aggresively in my face slagging off the english, I hadnt ever experienced such hatred against me before then just because I was english

Yes there have been some new punjabies who have not mixed in and who do not behave in their new surroundings. But to stereotype all punjabies in the manner is which you have is just as stupid as saying all Australians are racist!!

I wish, I want, I really would like to see something like this in Melbourne... Any chance it may happen..... Thats a question for our Indian posters ?
Brick Lane
About 30+ Indian Restaurants in a row. It's just about the first place I head for when ever I take a trip back to the UK.

Sydney Rd Coburg, would be a good spot
