You didn't check that before posting did you? Whilst I'd hate to get in the way of a argument, you really should construct the sentence correctly to prove your point.

As you were

I remember having an Aussie in the cab back in london a few years back. Told him how I was heading south to Australia and he warned me to watch out for racism there.

"but i'm white, how?" ... ... to which he went on to tell me how Aussies (generally) are racist towards ANYONE not from Australia!

Been here over 4 years now and see / hear it probably every day.

You really need to read this. If it were a race riot, people other than gang members would have been targetted.

It was the result of one. Alan Jones the Idiot shock jock, called everyone to the Beach to avenge the beating of a surfguard the previous week by a Lebanese gang. A lot of his listeners stupidly obliged. The Gangs were basically running rampant in that area until that point. It hasn't happened since and hadn't happened previously. There has been Ethnic Gang activity in Sydney since the early 60's. Remember that the Lebanese gangs travelled from their distant homes to take part in this pre arranged skirmish.

Did you read the article ?

Heres some footage, that gives some real information of what exactly happened.

I think you'll find there were more arrests in the following clash between Mods and Rockers that brought seaside towns to their knees in the early 60's.... You'll note that women were involved in this as well.

Only difference in the former I see is that both groups were white.... everything else was a similar set up.

Australias the most multicultural country in the world with people from every country living in peace together strange everyone overseas thinks OZ is a racist country. while countries that really are racist like Japan don't get criticised. Try immigrating to Japan if your a black African.

Isn't that a rather fundamental difference?

But of course I read the news and the news regarding racism in Australia is quite frankly a little worrying for me. But on the other hand I feel the media may be blowing this way out of proportion? - Of course many student were assaulted and even killed.

The UK has its own problems for which I personally think is not that bad but because of the media coverage, Australia seems to have a serious issue.

I just wanted your thoughts with regarding this please.

Having lived in quite a few countries, I am simply astounded by the way people overseas talk about racism in Australia. I have seen dreadful racism in Korea – discrimination against people from Africa and South Asia, and violence against anybody who looks remotely American (meaning white people). I’ve seen Asians (those British people call ‘Oriental’) treated appallingly in India. I’ve been treated dreadfully in Britain – partially because of my Australian accent, and partly because of my Ukrainian heritage.

I can also say that there is racism in Australia, but it is also one of the most racially diverse countries in the world. I mean, there are more Greeks in Melbourne than anywhere other than Athens! But then people in my family – especially in my mother’s generation – have been treated like worthless crap by Australians of British origin. They were made to change their names and were denied entry to schools and social groups and other things. In my generation it isn’t so bad, but I still have plenty of older people telling me how ‘New Australians’ (i.e. my family) have ruined Australian society.

There are plenty of bogans in Australia who are plenty racist. And sexist. And stupid. There are plenty of ghettos in cities like Sydney in Melbourne – some of them full of racist, feral white Australians, some of them full of racist, feral people of other cultures. It’s no different to any other country made up of immigrants.

Growing up in Australia my closest friends were Chinese, Indian, Maltese and Danish. The only time our different races factored into our friendships were when we attended events with each other’s families. There is a gigantic Asian population in Australia - something that always surprises guests we have from overseas.

I’m not saying there isn’t racism in Australia, because of course there is. But the way the doom and gloom ‘superior Britannia’ British press reports it is inaccurate.

However I have a feeling Queenslanders and people from Western Sydney might beg to differ...

Yes, although in the Aus case it really was a case of two tribes turning up to fight.

Similar to what happened in the Marseille when England played Tunisa in 1998 Was that racial ? I think it can be argued as incidental.

I've found Australians have a way of covering themselves when they're being complete and utter *****, everything is always "banter" with them. Often this banter can be vindictive and nasty.

Personally I think it's even more common place in London.... Certainly is/was (?) in South London, I mean towards people that are not from the area, especially Northerners and the Home Nations . Unless things have changed significantly since I left. ??? They used to give "heaps" to people from North of the River and East Enders.
