I've never really encountered that, do you mean to 'better oneself' ? Many (most) people want to improve their lives whether it be a bigger house, better car, better job etc but I'm not sure class comes into that. The odd thing is that the 'iconic' song 'Working Class Man' is in fact Australian.

One finds that one finds ones equals all over the colonies.
Give me anyone from anywhere who knows what's what over a 'member of the lower orders' any day...

Their study of what they call ''ping-pong Poms'' reveals almost 107,000 new settlers arrived from Britain between 2005 and 2010, and over the same period more than 30,000 British-born permanent settlers decided to permanently leave. Almost 60 per cent of them went home.
- ~70% stayed in Australia
- ~40% of those who left Australia went to a country other than the UK
Interesting.

Unfortunately there is plenty to be ashamed of. I visited Cape Town and Durban during those terrible years and although the country was very beautiful the attitude of many of it's white population was just disgusting, this is very recent history.

Plenty of racism in the UK which is/was disgusting, this is very recent history - plenty to be ashamed of
