I actually spent two years on Long Island, so I do know what's it's like to live stateside - and I love it. I moved away from England when I was 21 and never looked back - first to the Chanel Islands, then five years in France, best part of two years flitting back and forth between Long Island for work. I just loved America. From day one, it was like 'coming home.'
My wife and I have agreed that if it doesn't work out, we'll come back. I have no illusions - just the desire to go there and make a stab of it.
Anyway. Back on topic - I love fireflies.
Used to have them in New York, flitting about between the trees. Beautiful.
And racoons - as long as you don't get too close to the little f**kers. Or leave your rubbish bin open.

I like your signature, Leslie Charteris is one of my favourite authors. When I was a kid I loved reading the "Saint" books. Hopefully one day UK television may decide to do another series of "The Saint".

I love your enthusiasm for the US. When I think of all the people who want to come here and can't get a visa I do feel lucky to have had this opportunity.

I know Britvic, we had a talk about this the other night. My view is if you love someone enough then you will jump off the cliff with them. His is that he is getting too old to take a gamble and start all over again in a new country. He turns 40 this year and has a very specialised job working with the military in missile defense. He wouldn't get a job in the UK anywhere close to what his job pays, or doing what he is doing now, which he loves. Plus, he wants to retire by the time he is 55. There are other cultural things he doesn't like about the UK, including the gun laws, which he'd hate anyway. I do see his point of view, I understand it completely. Don't like it, but understand it.
The marriage isn't the strongest it could be which I think is adding to my sense of doubt.

.I mean, it's easy to say "If he loved you enough, he'd go to the UK for you. But, one can also say "If you love him enough, you'd stay here for him".
I'm am so sorry you're going through this. I'm sure, if your marriage isn't the strongest, that is the hardest part. Only you will know, eventually, what is best for you.
Which is a good thing because we like nuts here at BE - the more the merrier.

OK positive things about living here:-
- Big, wide parking spaces and a lot of them so even I can park.
- Bigger homes, open plan homes
- Air-conditioning (why the UK still don't have it
)
- Mexican food
- Wide motorways easy to get around, not many small winding roads
- Shops open late, past 6pm (UK still quite rare) can go shopping and to the library after dinner
- Decent steaks, hamburgers (very hard to get a bad one here though haven't had a good one in the UK) and coffee (though later has only been found to me in Seattle)
- People more open and pleasant upon first meeting them
- cars and (minivans cheaper) have more cupholders and gadgets on them
- where I have lived, in all have felt very safe walking going places at night..maybe due to late night opening of shops?
- Don't walk down streets where I live and have drunken loud-mouth 18yr olds throwing up at your feet. Though I know downtown etc does happen. Suppose America is so big and the UK relatively small why you come across more in the UK.

I love the Saint. My father regretted giving me The Saint in New York for my 16th birthday, because I've been wanting to move to NY ever since!
