I have toured around France a couple of times on my motorbike and when you get out in the sticks, make an effort to parlez Francois and there is no problem. Maybe the anti-English thing is more prevalent in the cities or around Calais. And around Calais who can blame them? Have you seen Brits on a booze cruise? That's just my experience.
Think is more of a coastal thing. Some of the best hospitality i've had in France was in in Paris, and as you say actually having a go at the language makes things easier too.
