And you'd want to chuck a few sprouts in, for maximum fart value.

I don't consider it doom and gloom to reign in spending that is marginal anyway, particularly if you think there is a significant prospect of diminished income or unemployment down the road. The brutal reality is that in the US there is very little social safety net for the unemployed, and planning for such an eventuality makes an awful lot of sense. So my take is not to stop spending, but to take a long hard look at monthly outgoings (I dropped cable channels I really never watched anyway and probably shouldhave cancelled a while ago), spend within one's budget (particularly for eating out), and spend out of current income rather than on a credit card.

My nanny tells me wonderful stories about raising 11 children in Dublin, in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Times were very tough.. but no one had any money, so no one really felt deprived. Thats just how it was. She told me that she sometimes had to pawn my Grandads good suit on a Monday just to get food, and then go and get it back on a Friday (payday) in time for him to wear it to the pub! They had a 3 bedroom small house with no bathroom. She made all their clothes. She feels more sorry for todays generation, she thinks that the pressures on us to have *stuff* is much much greater than it ever was in her day. She says people helped eachother much more... it was a much simpler life, but a wonderful one all the same.

Get real. However, when I first moved into my house I had to wait a few weeks before I was connected. Luckily, a couple of my neighbors had wireless that wasn't password protected. I also would sit in the parking lot of a closed cafe and get it when I had open houses at my old place. And of course, there's always the library.

I prefer this saying- Every man for himself.... When I've got my own house in order, then I'll think about my social responsibility.

I saw a toilet at Sams Club which had two different flushes for pee and pooh as a way of saving water, it was about $100. My OH is now recommending them when he installs toilets.
One of my sons friends said his mother told him "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down."

Not claiming the US is ahead of the world, just saying what I had seen available here at reasonable cost.

I just wonder where they have been all these years.
Next thing we'll 'discover' will be windmills and cars that get 45 mpg.

I was shocked yesterday at my restaurant when a 20 something woman purchased over $20.00 worth of food and drink for herself for dinner. It wasn't just the cost that astonished me but also the quantity of food and drink that she'd ordered. I couldn't believe she could consume so much.

A lady I knew who was in her nineties said to me, "I've just been at the hospital and see they have posters about an amazing new discovery - you can feed your own baby."
