I do think the limiter thing is a pile of crap and is the primary cause for the current situation. Don't make it any less annoying, though...;):D
How about that law they have in Germany? If you are going to have governors, that seems sensible to me.....;) I didn't like that, I didn't like that at all. :frown::frown::frown: |

You mean the law they have that you continually blink your lights at the car in front of you on the autobahn 'til they get over, so you can zoom around from the left lane, get in front of them and exit 25 feet away to the right?

What are lorries called in America? Nobody seems to recognise this word, and trucks are pick-ups:confused:

I was wondering about that, the aerodynamics I mean. You very seldom see a cabover tractor here anymore, I always figured it was because they were aerodynamically inferior. Never thought about the gap being the key. But isn't that gap there for manuverabilty? I've seen rigs practically jacknifed to get into a particularly awkward dock.
I also figured that the cabover usage in Europe had to do with maximizing trailer/tractor length ratio vs. OAL restrictions. You're right in that tractor/trailer length is the main reason we use cabovers more than conventionals here.. but the whole reason we have a length limit is our smaller towns, villages and roads. |

You know full well that drivers sit and chat with each other side by side for the fun of it. |

Why is it that European trucks don't have a hood? Doesn't it make it more aerodynamic if a truck had a hood in the front, as opposed to having the entire front pretty much flat?

I would say pickup truck or just pickup to distinguish, BIG trucks can be still called trucks or semis or 18 wheelers.

These big rigs, trucks, lorries, whatever you will, scare me rigid. For one reason:

OMG ... "Saloon" and "Estate car" - two terms I have completely and utterly purged from my vocabulary! These words sound so strange now! (along with 'boot' and 'bonnet' ...!)
While I agree with Optimus Prime (for once!) that European trucks are far superior (technically) to their US counterparts, US trucks (and truck drivers) have a mystique that the UK versions lack. In the UK, trucks are just big things that move up and down the highways and byways; in the US, they are big, bright, shining monsters lit up like Christmas trees, and really look the part. I don't care if they are grossly inefficient (they look it!), they look ... cool. How about "Big Rigs"? "I was passing a big rig when ..." or " I had a big rig riding on my ass ...." |
