at the moment I'm not driving anything which is annoying, however I'm going car shopping next week and plan to get something along the lines of a Ford Focus, much to the hilarity of my workmates who think that anyone who doesn't drive a truck or an suv must be a bit strange......I know I'm in Texas but I just can't justify buying something huge just to drive the 4 miles to work every day.....mind you judging by the way some of them drive I might be safer in a tank!

For what it's worth, I've been renting lots of cars this year due to biz travel needs. I'm obligated to stick to the bottom of the barrel (cheapest rentals). I've rented some real disappointments (biggest disappointment : Toyota Yaris - I'm a huge Toyota/Honda fan, and this car was so utterly crap!). The biggest surprise, by far, was a Kia Solo. This car had everything - satellite radio, bluetooth cell phone integration, overdrive, iPod interface, and it drove really well! Second biggest surprise was a Hyundai elantra - again, a great package.

My g/f is looking for a new car soon; she's hooked on Toyota Camry (which I've rented also, and is great) but I'm trying to convince her to look at the Hyundai Sonata, which is cheaper and has better features ... Methinks the Korean cars of today are where the Japanese cars were about 20/25 years ago - incredible bargains with better reliability/features than the competition.

Tip - if you are considering buying a car, check out the various rental companies and see if they have them in their fleet, and rent one for a week or so to get to know the car. Honda's, sadly, are hard to rent but Toyota's are out there. And my local Toyota dealership has a rental division.

The US Built focus is a piece of shit.

It was a choice between the Focus and the Toyota Matrix for my wife, and thankfully she went with the Matrix!

If I were to buy a new car now it would be a Hybrid. Or even the Nissan 'leaf' for inner city driving it makes more sense.

Are there any issues with using a Hybrid for ONLY very short trips, all the time? My g/f wants a hybrid but she only drives about 4 miles a day and I have concerns about the battery not getting a good 'charge'/'discharge' maybe. Even with her current car, the battery hardly lasts due to not getting a decent charge after starting, so I'm worried that with a Hybrid - where the battery is uber-expensive - this will be a more expensive issue.

Personally, I'm waiting for hybrid technology to evolve; I suspect the resale value of today's hybrids will be very low due to rapid advances in the technology. That, coupled with known 'aging' issues relating to the very expensive batteries (they only last 10 years max? ) makes me stay away.

If I was going to buy a car for short trips only, under 50 miles a day, then I would get a 100% Electric car. I read in Time magazine about the Leaf, and it looks good.

I'm no expert but I'm guessing, that like any battery, if you use it wrong it wont last long.

Ford Focus was the first car I owned over here.....and the last Ford. Had so many problems. They can build decent trucks though. Just my experience.

I think the opposite way around. At the moment I work about 8 miles from home and when I get my next vehicle if I still work only 8 miles away you can bet your ass I'll be getting a truck around here if you drive anything smaller than a truck or SUV then you'd better have good breaks cos the idiots expect you to to stop for them. If I have to work further away then I'll look for something more fuel efficient.
