Re: Planespotting
I did a Tupolev 154, the beast with the trijet setup (727 knockoff) into Moscow about 8 years ago. Damn that thing made a racket.

I was lucky enough to fly as a passenger on a relief flight from Sharjah to Singapore after the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 on the Antonov An-225. Boy what a racket that thing made, but there again it was ex-military.
Here it is in its kneeling / loading configuration before we loaded 2 x 54ft trailers with water purification equipment and a 40ft power pack on board destined for Bandar Acheh in Indonesia. I also flew on the 'smaller' An-124 into and out of Afghanistan and Kuwait numerous times on power plant projects. |
Re: Planespotting
As the UK has been hit by storm force winds today, this video has been shown on most of the news:

Re: Planespotting
That wouldn't even reach my top 10 of scary. Try the old Kai Tak in a crosswind

Re: Planespotting
I love crosswind landing videos ...

Re: Planespotting
Bah! The video isn't showing up on my iPhone. Is it a crosswind landing then? They always look a lot more dramatic than they are. I used to enjoy sitting directly behind the runway in the undershoot and watching crosswind landings. The front I the plane would be pointing at the cargo sheds before the pilot kicked the plane straight at the last second. As I said, dramatic looking but like doing a 3 point then to a pilot.
I do remember one squall coming through Heathrow and I ended up chasing an empty container bin down a taxiway that was heading towards the southern runway. I had to get in front of it and position the vehicle so that the bin hit the car and not a plane. And man did it slam into the car. I was leaning across the passenger seat half expecting to get showered in glass. The bin still wanted to lift over the car so I had to get someone else on scene quick smart to trap the bin from both sides. Dad at work with strong wind warnings were always the best! |

Re: Planespotting
As someone who has flown many times - one small airport looks the same D another really. It's not like they were supposed to land in Atlanta and landed in Greenville after all.

Agreed, I went to look at Google maps, and they're both a single runway in a wooded area. Still, they're nine miles apart, and I would to think that the pilot knows where he is to the nearest 4 miles!
It's the Ozarks - They're still trying to figure out what a Plane with so many windows is doing there. |
