Me too - if it's visibly clean I'll sit on it, make sure it's clean when I've finished (not that I tend to make a mess...) and then wash & dry my hands properly when I'm done. No problems.

I'm sure I've seen it reported that toilets are actually relatively clean when it comes to the microflora and fauna living on them, compared to other office and public areas such as keyboards and phone headsets and door handles. Toilets are bleached and cleaned a lot more often.

Yeah. I'll wipe away a few drips of wee, I'm not scared of that. I've yet to see a seat that has poo on it (though plenty of non-flushers), and when you got to go, you got to go, so I just sit down and go to work.

Any potential nasties that you might touch is dealt with, as you say, when you wash your hands, and anything that touches your bum-bum (one would hope) isn't going to make it to anywhere on your body that is going to cause any lasting issues anyway.

Take your dumps with reckless abandon, people, life is short

Yeah, the bog is pretty safe. Most places have a pretty strict and regularly spaced cleaning regimen, so there's an above average chance that any given seat has been cleaned before you use it.

:goodpost: This.

SoS - I embrace your 'care free' erm bathroom ways, but those rings are there for a reason ;)

False sense of security? Also, to stick to your arse, presumably.

How can you really be sure that the factory that produced the rings is any cleaner than the toilet seat anyway? It's like people that think hand sanitizer kills every germ known to man, when really the alcohol content is nowhere near high enough to make it any more effective as a disinfectant than hot water and soap.

Generally for every toilet seat a person may encounter 'in the wild', there is an above average chance it has been cleaned more recently than the toilet seats in their house.

Why worry about public bathrooms when shop cart handles and gas pump handles are the germiest surfaces around?

I don't worry about any of it, to be honest. I get a cold once or twice a year that becomes a minor inconvenience for about 3 days, I'm not losing any sleep over whether I might have touched some ghost of a booger on a shopping trolley handle.

Two of our food supermarkets have disposal wipe machines outside the door

A marketing triumph by disinfectant manufacturers. They've bred paranoia into us all.

Personally, I get more paranoid over the door handle after I've just scrubbed my hands clean, I then have to open the door (after the previous customers that may not have washed)

Wet wipes are probably pretty useless at actually disinfecting the handle though, unless you're really scrubbing for a good length of time.

When we went on a cruise last year, they had wipes next to the door. Not to clean the handle but so you could open the door without physically contacting the handle.

Just revert to kicking your way through the doors like an action hero. You keep your hands clean and also look like a badass.

I find most men's public toilets these days have a waste bin near the door, and many men, including me, use the paper towel to hold the door handle, then drop the towel in the bin and let the door close behind them.

Nobody just uses the door handle and **** the consequences like I do, then?

I can't be held responsible for any injuries suffered as a result of following my half-arsed advice :)
