How on earth do you get flu and killer diseases from a small area of leg flesh touching a loo seat for a couple of minutes? The apparent paranoia over a plastic seat is bizarre. if you're wandering around with weeping boils or broken skin uncovered then you're probably more minging than the last person who sat on that loo.

But if you're a person concerned by germs on a toilet seat you'd have a plaster on the damaged skin. If you had broken skin and you sat on a probably unhygienic ring of tissue paper, said tissue would be stuck to your broken skin when you got up. Those dispensers of 'gaskets' aren't hermetically sealed, they're in the loo with all the millions of germs.
Living puts you at risk. I think I may be hovering on the edges of OCD  You probably aren't old enough to remember the big wide cloth towels on rollers. God they were horrible |

I don't care two figs whether it's bizarre, precious etc. I feel the same way about sitting/laying in a bath in a hotel. Yes I do use a toilet seat cover...if there is none available...I use toilet paper to cover the seat. I also avoid touching toilet door handles. I could throw up when I see women putting their bags on the toilet floor...worse still a drinks container or food. I have seen a wrapped burger on the floor of the cubicle next to me.

Well the gaskets are in dispensers so are about as hygienic as anything can be in a toilet. Don't take the gasket nearest the dispenser slot, pull out one further in. I never take the sheet of face and hand tissue hanging from the dispenser machine. Pull out a couple before tearing one loose

Back in 2002/2003 when I worked at O'hare the toilets there had automatic seat covers, no idea if they still have them or not. Looks like they may still exist. |
Re: Pet Peeves?
I've only seen these in the New Orleans airport. They are a convenience.

Sounds like the ones I experienced in Italy. These had porcelain foot pads, so were quite posh.
The ones in Indonesia, did no have a handle to hold onto. Next to the hole was a barrel filled with water and a saucepan / scoop to wash the bits down with. |

Not saying it can't happen, but viruses tend to die pretty quickly when outside of the host for extended periods, and public bathrooms (at least ones that aren't of the calibre of that bog in Trainspotting anyway) tend to be cleaned on a pretty regular schedule, multiple times a day, so the risk, while there, is certainly low enough for most people not to worry about, IMO.

According to this Wikipedia article, "It is most common worm infection in the developed world. School aged children are the most commonly infected. In the United States about 20% of people at one point in time develop pinworm. Infection rates among high risk groups may be as high as 50%" Apparently one worm lays 14,000 eggs (on your bum) and these eggs are easily spread through poor hygiene. According to this page, "pinworm infects about 40 million people in the US" and "pinworm cases are 3 times more common than head lice cases." |

I had forgotten about those, remember seeing them in pubs. Similar to this, but white and metal from memory.
http://marcquswright.com/wp-content/...-Dispenser.jpg They still make them here in the US Darman Manufacturing CompanyCloth Roll Towel Cabinet and Processing Equipment Midwest Specialty Products - Nature's Linen Industrial Products You'd never use a roller towel in a pub. The last person using it could have been pissed out of his mind and after depositing his evening's cheer in the toilet half washed it off his face and left the other half on the towel. It took a quick mind and a very strong stomach for the ale to survive the hazards of using pub toilets |
