I don't recognize what you're describing. Where are you shopping?

It's quite common as sales staff tend to work on commission...I think.

So far this year I have probably been into Lowes 50-60 times (but could be more), Home Depot a couple of times, Barnes & Noble maybe five times, and a car spares store twice, and other than groceries/Walmart, and gas stations, I think that's about it for me. Nobody asked me who helped me, so I guess none of them pay staff on commission.

Clothes shops and department stores mostly ask the question. Can't say I've been to Lowes/HD, gas station or car spares stores in the last few years.

Couldn't resist the

Teenager was watching a tv show on his phone in the waiting room. 90% of Dragonball Z sounds like people with constipation competing to poop, the other 10% they are just yelling at each other.

Not sure if it's been mentioned or not (probably is as there are so many pages to this thread) - When they ask for your mobile number at checkout. Because I want more text spam to go along with the cold callers.
- on that note,
I must get about 20 'unknown' cold calls a day, despite having my number registered on donotcall.gov. Annoying.

If you give a business your phone number you have bypassed the do not call register - they are allowed to call.

I have NEVER received a junk text message on my cell phone, not never, not once, in 13 years. :)

I am rarely asked for my phone number, mostly because I rarely patronize brick & mortar stores other than Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, and Barnes & Noble. When I am asked, I usually don't give it out.

I don't hand out my number, I just find it aggravating when they ask for it and I have to say no with impending guilt trip for coming across rude.

You're lucky, but you've had your number for some time. Whoever had my number before me, must have offered it out to whoever would take it. Most of my cold calls are for people looking for 'Bill', and 'Do I sound like I'm Bill' doesn't seem to work.

as Jerseygirl said - try pretty much any clothes store, bath & body works.etc ;)

One more pet peeve to add to the list -
Strangers randomly striking up conversation... I get that people are more sociable and friendly here, but I'm not used to it yet... Especially on public transport. I've been stopped in the street a few times now and told to 'smile' too. I'm well aware my what my resting face is like, and telling me doesn't help.

...

I've only ever once been asked to give my phone number when completing a normal shopping transaction (ie not a car or something similar), and that was earlier this year in UK, when I bought a shirt. My younger son (20-ish) flinched visibly when I said, "I want to buy a shirt, not go on a date", but it creased up the female shop assistant who was in earshot (the recipient wasn't amused, though).

On public transport, headphones on is the international sign for 'don't bother me'. If you bung a pair on you should get left alone.

I drive everywhere so I haven't noticed that one. Usually when I get people striking up conversation randomly with me, it's in 'shared suffering' type situations, like long lines at the grocery or waiting around at the airport. Times like that I sort of welcome the distraction
