Don't get me started on WimbleTon. Even the news readers on US TV pronounce it with a T.

I suppose the rarity of a tie or draw in American sport hasn't helped. Winningest would be pretty much meaningless in cricket or football.

I only recently realized that glamour is not spelled glamor. And that adult is pronounced a'dult here. |

'Best' would do. Or at a pinch, the two-word 'most successful' is more than adequate.

Re: Pet Peeves?
My local news refers to everyone who helps as a Good Samaritan. It's never "Person rescues cat from tree" or "Man save woman from burning building", it's always a "Good Samaritan". It's not as if there is a large community of people from Samaria who are being racially pointed out.

Re: Pet Peeves?
Now that America has totally altered the meaning of "unique", a local vehicle dealer has set about ****ing up the word "exclusive" too. :frown: Either that or everyone in the US who wants a Ram truck is going to have to travel to the suburbs of Charlotte, NC because Keffer is now claiming to be the "exclusive Ram truck dealer in the US".

Re: Pet Peeves?
Shamefacedly I must admit to reading the daily mail online, mainly because I find it entertaining in a cheap way. What really gets my goat is the sidebar of stills of wannabe in the news "stars" parading themselves half- clothed, especially the women and the accompanying text-"taut abs", "honed midriff", "enviable cleavage" and so on and so on... will it never end? maybe I'm jealous?
