Re: Pet Peeves?
Talking about cops.. maybe this is just a New York thing? They are very considerate & polite, they are going to do you a big favour. Instead of writing you a ticket for what you actually did, they will write you a ticket for something completely different, give you a break. For instance, instead of writing you up for being clocked at 55 in a 40mph zone, they'll give you a ticket for a broken taillight and restricted view (you have a parking permit hanging from your mirror.) You are relieved, send the ticket in. Then when you get the fine, you have a nasty suspicion that it was more expensive than the real infraction...??
Around here, they'll just write you up for everything....and definitely for speeding at the beginning/end of the month, to hit quota....they couldn't give a toss in the middle of the month.
What pisses me off, how inconsistent cop cars are, some with blues and twos going aren't so bad, some, well in the next town when they are parked also have highbeams blinking, which is begging you to crash as you are blinded by the light show as you go past.

Re: Pet Peeves?
Forgot to include in my morning bitch-fest my usual seasonal hatred of halloween.
What's the point in expending so much effort into this ridiculous festival of commercialised mysticism and organised begging if they're not even going to give you a f***ing day off work?
I can buy sweets any time of the year, and if I want to watch a bunch of people dressing up I'll go to the theatre and actually be entertained.

Thanksgiving I can get on board with because it's a day off (two if I'm lucky) and I get to stuff my face. I can do without everyone descending upon my gaff and making a mess, of course ...

I love it when DD & her partner come in from Massachusetts for turkey-day. First, it means meat-eaters are in the majority for a change. Then, the girls do most of the cooking & ALL the clean-up for us lazy old folks!!

I just hate the way it has been emasculated & stretched out in time like every other holiday. In our town they had a halloween event on the village green last Saturday - nine days before halloween!! - in the middle of the bloody day!! Oh, very scary & atmospheric!! Especially as the costumes were mostly totally lame, commercialised & popular-culture related.
I love October, I like mixed nuts and toffee apples, and I did quite enjoy watching fireworks and messing around with Bengal matches and sparklers, but the rest of it just annoys me.

My daughter spends about 3 months pre-Hallowe'en, along with her friends, building a haunted walk in one of the guys' back garden. Whatever they collect goes to charity and they have a blast doing it! It's amazing how creative these people can be - they're in their late 30's & early 40's - using very little money and a lot of sweat and imagination!

Re: Pet Peeves?
We get a kick out of the little ones that come around on Hallowe'en - we sit in the back of our hatch back with the door up and I surround myself with spooky globes and laughing witches while I hold the big bowl of sweets to hand out. We and the next door neighbors sit and gossip while the kids come by. But, my Pet Peeve of the evening is the teen-agers who come by dressed in regular clothes, carrying a pillow case for all the goodies they expect to collect. And they don't even say thank-you! Some of the "tweens" girls dress like street walkers and just don't know how terrible they look.

As far as the Hallowe'en thing, what we do is the extent of it - some of the neighbours put up orange lights, hang ghosts & spiders from the trees and have big blow up features on their lawns with everything covered in fake spider webs. It is a bit much.
